LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Anthony D'Urso upon the occasion of his
designation as recipient of the 2014 Outstanding Vision and Commitment
to Action Award on April 26, 2014
WHEREAS, Individuals who give of their time and energies and serve the
best interests of their communities are an asset beyond remuneration and
cannot be sufficiently extolled; and
WHEREAS, Anthony D'Urso has given not only of his time and energies
but also of his competence, intelligence and leadership and consequently
has been designated for special honor; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Anthony D'Urso
upon the occasion of his designation as recipient of the 2014 Outstand-
ing Vision and Commitment to Action Award by Bridges to Community, at
its Annual Spring Gala on April 26, 2014, at Mamaroneck Beach & Yacht
Club, Mamaroneck, New York; and
WHEREAS, Bridges to Community is a 20 year old non-profit community
development organization that takes volunteers to developing countries
to work, learn, and reflect on how to build a better world; the organ-
ization is made up of people from different cultures, countries, ages,
professions and socioeconomic backgrounds who work together to build
relationships of empathy, respect and support; and
WHEREAS, The Outstanding Vision and Commitment to Action Award is
Bridges to Community's highest honor, and is given to individuals who
have made a significant impact in helping people in the developing
world; and
WHEREAS, Anthony D'Urso, affectionately known as Tony, has been called
upon to contribute his time and talents to countless civic and charita-
ble endeavors and has always given of himself unstintingly; and
WHEREAS, A native of Italy, Anthony D'Urso came to the United States
in 1960 seeking the American Dream; while working all day, he attended
night school to turn his dream into a reality and built his own success-
ful construction company; and
WHEREAS, During the 1970s, Anthony D'Urso turned his attention to his
community and became an integral part of the New York Housing Authority
where he was responsible for the restoration of burned out buildings and
building new units for public housing; and
WHEREAS, Anthony D'Urso ran for public office in 1991 and was elected
Councilman for the Town of North Hempstead, Long Island, where he served
for 14 years, retiring in 2005; and
WHEREAS, Since his retirement, Anthony D'Urso has devoted himself to
giving back and making the world a better place; he travels the world to
Kenya and Haiti, and has made 15 trips with Bridges to Community to
Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic where he offers his services and
experience in construction, and has been instrumental in the building of
16 houses; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the entire period of his community service, a
period of constructive involvement, Anthony D'Urso has stood constant in
dignity, good grace and humor; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an individ-
ual for the benefit of others which Anthony D'Urso has displayed
throughout his life; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Anthony D'Urso upon the occasion of his designation as recipient
of the 2014 Outstanding Vision and Commitment to Action Award; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Anthony D'Urso.
