LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Dr. Naji Abi Shahin upon the occasion of
his designation for special recognition by Lutheran HealthCare on May
17, 2014

WHEREAS, Individuals who give of their time and energies and serve the
best interests of their communities are an asset beyond remuneration and
cannot be sufficiently extolled; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Naji Abi Shahin has given not only of his time and ener-
gies but also of his competence, intelligence and leadership and conse-
quently has been designated for special honor; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Dr. Naji Abi
Shahin upon the occasion of his designation for special recognition by
Lutheran HealthCare, to be celebrated at its 131st Annual Dinner Dance
on Saturday, May 17, 2014, at Pier Sixty, Chelsea Piers, New York; and
WHEREAS, Born and raised in Lebanon, Dr. Naji Abi Shahin has been
called upon to contribute his time and talents to countless civic and
charitable endeavors and has always given of himself unstintingly; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Naji Abi Shahin, Medical Doctor, Fellow, American College
of Surgeons, is the Vice Chairman of the Department of Surgery at Luth-
eran HealthCare; he has been a valued member of the Lutheran family and
the communities it serves for 43 years; and
WHEREAS, Prior to immigrating to the United States with his wife,
Goldy, Dr. Naji Abi Shahin earned his bachelor's degree from the Ameri-
can University of Beirut in 1965, and received his medical degree from
the American University of Beirut Medical School in 1970; and
WHEREAS, After briefly settling in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where he
completed a surgical residency at the Detroit General Hospital, Dr. Naji
Abi Shahin and Goldy moved to Brooklyn, New York, to complete a four-
year surgical residency at Lutheran Medical Center; in his last year of
residency at Lutheran, he served as chief resident and began what would
be a long successful journey as a committed medical professional and
physician leader at the medical center; and
WHEREAS, Since first joining Lutheran Medical Center in 1971 as a
surgical resident, Dr. Naji Abi Shahin has also served as chief resi-
dent, emergency room surgical director, trauma surgeon, and vice chair-
man of the Department of Surgery; and
WHEREAS, Among his countless duties in this capacity, Dr. Naji Abi
Shahin has operated his own private practice in Brooklyn since 1976; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Naji Abi Shahin is highly respected for being an active
and pioneer member of the Physician's Advancement Committee at Lutheran
Medical Center, a small group of dedicated physicians who have helped to
build a culture of philanthropy at Lutheran Medical Center; and
WHEREAS, A diplomate of the American Board of Surgery, Dr. Naji Abi
Shahin is a member of the Brooklyn Surgical Society, the Bay Ridge
Medical Society, and a fellow of the American College of Surgeons; in
addition, he is board certified in general surgery; and
WHEREAS, In addition to his wife, Goldy, with him throughout have been
their three children, Tania, George and John, as well as six grandchil-
dren, all of whom feel privileged to be a part of his life and rejoice
in his achievements; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the entire period of his community service, a
period of constructive involvement, Dr. Naji Abi Shahin has stood
constant in dignity, good grace and humor; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an individ-
ual for the benefit of others which Dr. Naji Abi Shahin has displayed
throughout his life; and

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Dr. Naji Abi Shahin upon the occasion of his designation for
special recognition by Lutheran HealthCare; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Dr. Naji Abi Shahin.
