LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Dr. Philip McCallion upon the occasion
of his designation as recipient of the Distinguished Continuing Profes-
sional Education Leadership Award of Excellence by the Rockefeller
College of Public Affairs & Policy
WHEREAS, Individuals who give of their time and energies and serve the
best interests of their communities are an asset beyond remuneration and
cannot be sufficiently extolled; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Philip McCallion has given not only of his time and ener-
gies but also of his competence, intelligence and leadership and conse-
quently has been designated for special honor; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Dr. Philip
McCallion upon the occasion of his designation as recipient of the
Distinguished Continuing Professional Education Leadership Award of
Excellence by the Rockefeller College of Public Affairs & Policy, to be
celebrated at its 2014 Alumni Dinner and Awards Ceremony on Friday, May
16, 2014, at the New York State Museum, Albany, New York; and
WHEREAS, Each year, Rockefeller College of Public Affairs & Policy
honors individuals such as Dr. Philip McCallion, for their outstanding
contributions in the areas of political science, public administration,
leadership, and continuing professional development; and
WHEREAS, A Professor in the School of Social Welfare at the University
at Albany, Philip McCallion, Ph.D. ACSW also serves as a Hartford Geria-
tric Social Work Faculty Scholar and Mentor, and is Co-Director of the
Center for Excellence in Aging and Community Wellness; and
WHEREAS, Throughout his tenure, Dr. Philip McCallion has conducted
extensive research on such areas as the randomized control trials of
psychosocial interventions for people with dementia and their caregiv-
ers, as well as the system design work on creating aging prepared commu-
nities, care transitions strategies, and participant directed practices
in aging services delivery; and
WHEREAS, In addition, he evaluated the implementation of non-pharmaco-
logical interventions for persons with dementia and of psycho-education-
al interventions for family caregivers, and increased the reach of
palliative care programs; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Philip McCallion has over 100 publications on inter-
ventions with older adults with chronic conditions, caregivers of frail
elderly, persons with Alzheimer's Disease, and persons with intellectual
and developmental disabilities; and
WHEREAS, Editor of HOUSING FOR THE ELDERLY: POLICY AND PRACTICE
ISSUES, Dr. Philip McCallion is co-editor of GRANDPARENTS OF CHILDREN
WITH DISABILITIES: FACING THE CHALLENGES and SOCIAL WORK PRACTICE
RESEARCH FOR THE 21ST CENTURY; and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, he is co-author of MAINTAINING COMMUNICATION
WITH PERSONS WITH DEMENTIA and has produced videotape and CD-ROM based
training and self-instructional materials on Information & Assistance,
Financial Abuse Prevention, Intellectual Disabilities and Dementia, and
End of Life Care for Persons with Intellectual Disabilities; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Philip McCallion has been the recipient of numerous
awards and accolades from several organizations, some of which include,
the National Institute on Drug Abuse, National Institute on Aging, the
United States Health Resources and Services Administration, the Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention, the Alzheimer's Association, and the
Developmental Disabilities Planning Council; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the entire period of his community service, a
period of constructive involvement, Dr. Philip McCallion has stood
constant in dignity, good grace and humor; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an individ-
ual for the benefit of others which Dr. Philip McCallion has displayed
throughout his life; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Dr. Philip McCallion upon the occasion of his designation as
recipient of the Distinguished Continuing Professional Education Leader-
ship Award of Excellence by the Rockefeller College of Public Affairs &
Policy; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Dr. Philip McCallion.
