LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Harold H. Greenstein posthumously upon
the occasion of his designation as recipient of a Liberty Medal, the
highest honor bestowed upon an individual by the New York State Senate
WHEREAS, It is incumbent upon the people of the State of New York to
recognize and acknowledge those within our midst who have made signif-
icant contributions to the quality of life therein; and
WHEREAS, From time to time this Legislative Body takes note of certain
extraordinary individuals it wishes to recognize for their valued
contributions to the success and progress of society and publicly
acknowledge their endeavors which have enhanced the basic humanity among
us all; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Harold H.
Greenstein posthumously upon the occasion of his designation as recipi-
ent of a Liberty Medal, the highest honor bestowed upon an individual by
the New York State Senate to be celebrated on Monday, May 5, 2014, at
the Albany County Honor A Veteran Ceremony at the American Legion Joseph
E. Zaloga Post No. 1520 in Albany, New York; and
WHEREAS, The New York State Senate Liberty Medal was established by a
resolution in 2014 and is awarded to individuals who have merited
special commendation for exceptional, heroic, or humanitarian acts on
behalf of their fellow New Yorkers; and
WHEREAS, Born October 10, 1924, in New Britain, Connecticut, Harold H.
Greenstein served his country as a member of the United States Navy from
1944 to 1946; during his service, he was a Weather Forecaster, and
served in Pearl Harbor; and
WHEREAS, Harold H. Greenstein's exceptional service earned him the
Asiatic Pacific Ribbon, American Theatre Ribbon, Victory Ribbon, and the
Millennium Military Service Award; and
WHEREAS, Upon his return from the military, Harold H. Greenstein
worked as a wholesale wine and liquor distributor; and
WHEREAS, Active in his community, Harold H. Greenstein was a member of
the Jewish War Veterans and the American Legion, and served as 14th Ward
Alderman for the City of Albany; in addition, he was a member of the 1st
elected school board of the City of Albany, and Albany Common Council
for 20 years, as well as Chairman of City of Albany Civil Service
Commission; and
WHEREAS, Harold H. Greenstein died on May 25, 2013, at the age of 89;
he is survived by his daughter, Nancy, who feels privileged to have been
a part of his life and rejoices in his achievements; and
WHEREAS, Individuals such as Harold H. Greenstein, devoted to improv-
ing the quality of life for others, enabling them to build lives of
dignity and self-worth, are deserving of the highest praise and recogni-
tion; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Harold H. Greenstein posthumously upon the occasion of his desig-
nation as recipient of a Liberty Medal, the highest honor bestowed upon
an individual by the New York State Senate; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the family of Harold H. Greenstein.
