LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Staff Sergeant Bernard Dunn of Port
Washington, New York upon the occasion of his designation as recipient
of the Meritorious Service Medal by the United States Army
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to take note of and
publicly acknowledge individuals who have distinguished themselves
through their exemplary careers, accomplishments, and purposeful lives
of service to their community; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Staff Sergeant Bernard Dunn of Port Washington, New York, upon the occa-
sion of his designation as recipient of the Meritorious Service Medal by
the United States Army at the ceremony given annually on St. Patrick's
Day at the 69th Regiment Armory in New York City; and
WHEREAS, Staff Sergeant Bernard Dunn received the Meritorious Service
Medal for his 26 years of distinguished service to his country, culmi-
nating as a Mortar Section Leader; his hard work and dedication were in
the highest traditions of the Infantry Regiment, the 27th Infantry
Brigade Combat Team, the 42nd Infantry Division, the New York Army
National Guard, and the United States Army; and
WHEREAS, Bernard Dunn is the son of Barbara Erickson and the late
Bernard Dunn Sr., as well as the great-grandson of Edwin Lewis, founder
of Lewis Oil; he is a graduate of Schreiber High School, Class of 1987;
and
WHEREAS, This esteemed man enlisted with the United States Marine
Corps in 1987 and was honorably discharged in 1991; during this time he
served ably in both Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm;
and
WHEREAS, In 1992, Bernard Dunn joined the National Guard as part of
the 71st Infantry Division and was later transferred to the 204th Engi-
neers Division; he was a valued contributor to engineering projects
dealing with such emergencies as the West Point fires, hurricanes, ice
storms, and other natural disasters throughout New York State; and
WHEREAS, Staff Sergeant Bernard Dunn served bravely as a volunteer
firefighter with the Atlantic Hook & Ladder Company, and assisted in the
recovery operations following the World Trade Center attacks; he was
also stationed to the area as part of the 204th Engineers division of
the National Guard at Ground Zero for eight days; and
WHEREAS, In 2003, Bernard Dunn admirably served his country as part of
Operation Iraqi Freedom, spending one year in combat with the 878 Engi-
neers Battalion; and
WHEREAS, In 2007, this devoted soldier was deployed to Afghanistan as
a Security Team Leader for a police mentor team; he returned the next
year and was transferred to the Mortar Section; in 2011, he became the
leader of the Mortar Section as well as being promoted to Staff
Sergeant; and
WHEREAS, Staff Sergeant Bernard Dunn is now retired from the Army
National Guard and resides in Port Washington with his wife Dorothy and
two children, Shannon and Aidan; and
WHEREAS, Staff Sergeant Bernard Dunn is employed with The Village of
Munsey Park and is a proud member of The VFW Post 1819 in Manhasset
Isle; and
WHEREAS, Individuals who dedicate their lives to military service
merit the commendation and applause of all citizens for their commitment
to the preservation of American freedom; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
the great State of New York; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Staff Sergeant Bernard Dunn of Port Washington, New York, upon the
occasion of designation as recipient of the Meritorious Service Medal by
the United States Army; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Staff Sergeant Bernard Dunn, Port Washington, New York.
