LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Captain Maria D'Amelio upon the occasion
of her designation as recipient of the Trailblazer Award on March 24,
2014

WHEREAS, The quality and character of life in the State of New York is
greatly enriched by the faithful and generous service of those who
devote their purposeful endeavors in service to their community, helping
to protect and preserve the community and its citizens; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and
commend individuals of such magnanimous conduct and bearing who demon-
strate a deep and continuing concern for others, and in so doing,
inspire others to do the same; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Captain Maria D'Amelio upon the occasion of her designation as recipient
of the Trailblazer Award; this momentous occasion was celebrated at the
16th Annual Trailblazers Awards Ceremony on Monday, March 24, 2014, at
the Nassau County Legislative Chamber, Mineola, New York; and
WHEREAS, As part of Women's History Month, Nassau County Auxiliary
Police Captain Maria D'Amelio was chosen for this auspicious award for
her outstanding work within her community; and
WHEREAS, Maria D'Amelio was born in Italy, and later settled in Great
Neck, New York during the mid-1970s; as a young woman with a strong work
ethic, she paid her way through Queens College with her earnings and
tips from waitressing at local restaurants; and
WHEREAS, While still in College, Maria D'Amelio began working in the
mailroom of a market research firm; within three months she was offered
a full-time supervisory position, and over the years rose to the
esteemed title of Vice President of Operations; and
WHEREAS, In her capacity as Vice President, Maria D'Amelio directed
client donations of food and consumer products to many charitable organ-
izations including The Inn, Island Harvest, and Long Island Cares; and
WHEREAS, Captain Maria D'Amelio has been called upon to contribute her
time and talents to countless civic and charitable endeavors and has
always given of herself unstintingly; and
WHEREAS, As Nassau County Auxiliary Police Captain, Maria D'Amelio
patrols her community to ensure the safety of its residents; she is the
Auxiliary Police Liaison to the Village of Great Neck, Village of Great
Neck Plaza Business Improvement District, Department of Public Safety,
and the Town of North Hempstead; and
WHEREAS, In addition, she is a popular speaker for the Lakeville
Elementary School's Stranger Danger Program, as well as at University
Gardens Property Owners Association's Homeowners Safety programs; and
WHEREAS, Vigilant in her efforts to keep the citizens of Great Neck,
Roslyn, and Port Washington safe, Captain Maria D'Amelio takes her job
seriously and with a selflessness that is beyond the call of duty; and
WHEREAS, An avid volunteer, Captain Maria D'Amelio has given countless
hours to Meals on Wheels, the Lioness Club of Glen Cove, North Shore
Hospital's Lions Eye Bank, the Great Neck Co-Op & Condominium Council,
and the Board of the Kings Point House; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the entire period of her community service, a
period of constructive involvement, Captain Maria D'Amelio has stood
constant in dignity, good grace and humor; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an individ-
ual for the benefit of others which Captain Maria D'Amelio has displayed
throughout her life; and

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Captain Maria D'Amelio upon the occasion of her designation as
recipient of the Trailblazer Award; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Captain Maria D'Amelio.
