LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring State Police Investigator Gary A.
Darstein upon the occasion of his designation as recipient of the Super-
intendent's Commendation Award

WHEREAS, The quality and sanctity of community life are cherished values
worthy of safeguarding, and this Legislative Body is moved to honor
those exemplary public servants who devote their lives to preserving and
protecting such values; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Investigator Gary A. Darstein, who is assigned to Onondaga County State
Police Lysander, Troop D, and resides in Baldwinsville, New York, upon
the occasion of his designation as a recipient of the Superintendent's
Commendation Award; and
WHEREAS, Investigator Gary A. Darstein has been selected for this
prestigious award for his heroic efforts in apprehending a suspect
sought in the sexual assault of a young victim, as well as the murder of
a Liverpool woman; and
WHEREAS, Investigator Gary A. Darstein will be recognized for his
outstanding police work at the 38th Annual New York State Police Super-
intendent's Commendation and Awards Day Ceremony, to be held at the New
York State Police Academy on May 7, 2014, in Albany, New York; and
WHEREAS, On the eve of March 14, 2013, Investigator Gary A. Darstein
monitored his car radio transmissions and was advised to respond to an
attack; he immediately altered his route to the crime scene, and based
on the information generated, encountered the suspect jogging slowly
along the road in the Town of Clay; and
WHEREAS, Investigator Gary A. Darstein, keeping his siren off to avoid
being noticed, drove past the suspect and then quickly made a U-turn to
stop five feet in front of the suspect; and
WHEREAS, Investigator Gary A. Darstein then placed his vehicle in park
and chased the suspect, thwarting his attempt to flee into a nearby
wooded area; Investigator Darstein heroically tackled the suspect and
placed him into custody; and
WHEREAS, With the help of State Police Lysander, Troop D Investigators
and the Onondaga County District Attorney's Office, Investigator Gary A.
Darstein arrested the suspect, who was later charged and sentenced to
life in prison; and
WHEREAS, In keeping with the finest traditions of the New York State
Police Department, Investigator Gary A. Darstein has distinguished
himself by his quick thinking, dedication and his exemplary service to
protect the citizens of the Central New York community; and
WHEREAS, The courageous and dedicated efforts of public servants such
as Investigator Gary A. Darstein, who have devoted their lives to
protecting the lives of others, are worthy of the praise and recognition
of this Great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Investigator Gary A. Darstein upon the occasion of his designation
as the recipient of a Superintendent's Commendation Award, to be recog-
nized at the 38th Annual New York State Police Superintendent's Commen-
dation and Awards Day Ceremony on May 7, 2014, in Albany, New York; and
be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Investigator Gary A. Darstein.
