LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Major Patrick W. Miller for his coura-
geous actions during the tragic shooting at Fort Hood on April 2, 2014

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize heroic
acts of those exemplary soldiers who take prompt and appropriate action
in emergency situations and, in so doing, preserve the lives of others;
and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to pay trib-
ute to Major Patrick W. Miller for his heroism in saving several lives
during the recent Fort Hood tragedy; and
WHEREAS, Major Patrick W. Miller was born and raised in Allegany, New
York; he graduated from Allegany-Limestone Central School in 1999; and
WHEREAS, After high school, Major Miller attended St. Bonaventure
University where he was enrolled in the Reserve Officers Training Corps;
he joined the United States Army in 2003 after graduating from St.
Bonaventure; and
WHEREAS, In March of 2004, Major Miller was deployed to Iraq for his
first of two tours; at the time, he was a second lieutenant and the
commander of a platoon of medics; during his second tour, he was an
adviser to the Iraqi Army; and
WHEREAS, In 2009, Major Miller earned master's degrees in business and
public administration from Syracuse University through a defense comp-
trollership program; and
WHEREAS, Major Miller was assigned to Fort Hood, Texas, in August of
2013; currently, he resides there with his wife, Ashley; and
WHEREAS, On April 2, 2014, a gunman opened fire in Fort Hood, Texas;
in a matter of only a few minutes, he had shot soldiers in two build-
ings; in addition to killing three soldiers, he wounded 16 others; one
of the wounded soldiers was Major Patrick W. Miller; and
WHEREAS, During the shooting rampage, Major Miller was shot in the
abdominal area; despite being critically wounded and while attempting to
put pressure on his wound, Major Miller continued to pull his fellow
soldiers to safety behind a door in one of the buildings which was under
assault; he then managed to call 911 to report the shooting; due to his
heroic actions, countless lives were saved; and
WHEREAS, Through his spontaneous and courageous actions, Major Patrick
W. Miller demonstrated his character and compassion for the welfare of
his fellow soldiers; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Major Patrick W. Miller for his heroism on April 2, 2014; and be
it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Major Patrick W. Miller.
