LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION recognizing the commitment and sacrifices of New
York State's Corrections Officers in conjunction with the observance of
National Correctional Officers and Employees Week 2014

WHEREAS, The quality and sanctity of community life are cherished
values, worthy of safeguarding, and this Legislative Body is moved to
honor those individuals who serve to preserve and protect such values,
lauding particularly their unwavering courage and dedication in the
daily performance of their duties; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is moved to recognize the
commitment and sacrifices of New York State's Corrections Officers in
conjunction with the observance of Correctional Officers and Employees
Week in the State of New York, and National Correctional Officers and
Employees Week 2014; and
WHEREAS, Currently the fourth largest prison system in the United
States, New York State operates 58 correctional facilities that house
approximately 54,300 inmates; in addition, the Department of Corrections
is responsible for the management of 36,000 ex-offenders in the communi-
ty; and
WHEREAS, The more than 60,000 corrections officers and employees in
the State of New York who oversee the State's correctional facilities
and are responsible for the care, custody, and maintenance of the incar-
cerated, deserve to be recognized and appreciated for their demanding
and dangerous work; and
WHEREAS, Many of New York State's correctional facilities are located
in rural areas and small towns, and draw on the residents of those
communities to serve in the essential role of corrections officers; and
WHEREAS, The Attica Correctional Facility is one such facility; a
maximum security/supermax prison, it is located in Attica, New York, a
town in Wyoming County, the population of which was 7,702 at the 2010
census; and
WHEREAS, After it was constructed in the 1930s, the Attica Correction-
al Facility held many of the most dangerous criminals of the time; the
prison now holds many inmates who are serving various types of sentences
and who are usually sent to the facility because of disciplinary prob-
lems in other facilities; and
WHEREAS, The management and operation of prisons is difficult work,
requiring equal amounts of patience, discipline and creativity; the
dedicated corrections officers who staff New York State's prisons daily
apply themselves to ensuring the custody, safety, and well-being of the
inmates in their care; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those dedicated
public servants who unselfishly devote their lives to the preservation
of order and the protection of others are worthy and due full praise for
their commitment and noble endeavors; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
recognize the commitment and sacrifices of New York State's Correction
Officers; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Attica Correctional Facility.
