LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Richard and Eunice Tabor upon the occa-
sion of being selected as the Tompkins County 2014 Senior Citizens of
the Year by the New York State Office for the Aging
WHEREAS, Senior citizens bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to
the increasingly active roles they play in today's society; their past
contributions and future participation are a vital part of, and valuable
asset to, the fabric of community life and activity; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Richard and
Eunice Tabor upon the occasion of being selected as the Tompkins County
2014 Senior Citizens of the Year; this momentous occasion will be cele-
brated at the New York State Office for the Aging's 2014 Senior Citizens
Day Celebration on Tuesday, May 6, 2014, at the Hart Theatre Lounge in
the Egg, Albany, New York; and
WHEREAS, Each May in the State of New York and across the Nation,
during National Older Americans Month, the New York State Office for the
Aging pauses to acknowledge the outstanding contributions made by older
citizens; and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, members of the older generation have helped
build and shape our Nation to be the greatest in the world; they have
defended out freedoms and values to ensure that those who come after
them may have better lives; nowhere in the nation is the legacy of their
efforts more visible and more a part of the lives of all citizens than
here in the State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Richard and Eunice Tabor, a very active and industrious
couple, have inspired and enriched the lives of their family and friends
through their love and respect for others, generously sharing the wisdom
gained over years of experiencing life to its fullest; and
WHEREAS, Residents of Ithaca, New York, Richard and Eunice Tabor are
native to upstate New York, Eunice, from Watertown, and Richard, from
Cooperstown; the couple met while attending SUNY Geneseo and will cele-
brate their Golden Anniversary this June; and
WHEREAS, Richard Tabor spent the majority of his career as an elemen-
tary school teacher at Marcellus Central School; Eunice attended semi-
nary at age 52, becoming a United Methodist Pastor and serving in
Madrid, Massena and Ithaca, New York; and
WHEREAS, Richard and Eunice Tabor have been called upon to contribute
their time and talents to countless civic and charitable endeavors and
have always given of themselves unstintingly; and
WHEREAS, Steadfast volunteers for seven years, Richard and Eunice
Tabor have shared their energies with the community since arriving in
2007; and
WHEREAS, Richard Tabor created a new and inviting place with new book-
cases and furniture for children to experience literacy at the Ithaca
Youth Bureau; his efforts include grant writing for the purchase of new
books, organizing, cataloguing, and weekly oversight of the program; and
WHEREAS, In addition, Richard has volunteered at Tompkins County
Public Library and the Friends of TCPL Book Sale; at Loaves and Fishes,
a free community meal, he has also provided hospitality and advocacy for
the less fortunate within the community; and
WHEREAS, Eunice Tabor has led Bible Study and worship services at
Longview Senior Housing for six years; she is a member of St. Paul's
choir and hosts a card making workshop creating valentines for those who
are home-bound; and
WHEREAS, In addition, she provides grief counseling and comfort care
to many individuals in need of support during difficult times; together
with her husband, the Tabor's volunteer at the Rescue Mission's Court
Street Place, Emergency Shelter and Food Pantry; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the entire period of their community service, a
period of constructive involvement, Richard and Eunice Tabor have stood
constant in dignity, good grace and humor; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by individuals
for the benefit of others which Richard and Eunice Tabor have displayed
throughout their lives; and
WHEREAS, With them throughout have been their four loving children and
seven beautiful grandchildren, all of whom feel privileged to be a part
of their lives and rejoice in their achievements; and
WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to publicly recog-
nize and commend those who have witnessed and contributed to the devel-
opments and achievements of our Nation, State, and communities over the
course of their noteworthy lives; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Richard and Eunice Tabor upon the occasion of being selected as
the Tompkins County 2014 Senior Citizens of the Year by the New York
State Office for the Aging; and be it further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Richard and Eunice Tabor.
