LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending outgoing Chief Christopher J. Hughes
upon the occasion of his designation for special recognition after many
years of dedicated service to the Northport Volunteer Fire Department

WHEREAS, The firefighters of New York State are renowned throughout the
Nation; their reputation is synonymous with excellence in the arduous
field of fire protection and prevention; and
WHEREAS, Since the early days of "teapot steamers," the volunteer
firefighter has been the cornerstone of our great Nation's efforts to
spare us from the ravages of fire; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is proud to commend outgoing Chief
Christopher J. Hughes upon the occasion of his designation for special
recognition after many years of dedicated service to the Northport
Volunteer Fire Department, to be celebrated at its 125th Annual Instal-
lation Dinner on Saturday, May 17, 2014, at the Larkfield Manor, East
Northport, New York; and
WHEREAS, Christopher J. Hughes was a member of Northport Fire Depart-
ment Smokeaters (Junior Fire Fighters) from 1990-1994; and
WHEREAS, He served his country as a member of the United States Air
Force as Crew Chief on an A10-Warthog Air Craft between 1994 to 1998;
and
WHEREAS, In 1998, he became a member of the Northport Volunteer Fire
Department, assigned to Engine Company and was elected 2nd Lieutenant in
2002, 1st Lieutenant in 2004 and Captain in 2006; and
WHEREAS, In 2008, Christopher J. Hughes was elected 2nd Assistant
Chief of the department, 1st Assistant Chief in 2010, and Chief in 2012,
ably serving with distinction for two years; and
WHEREAS, Christopher J. Hughes was employed by the New York City
Police Department from May 2000 to October 24, 2000, and has been a
member of the Northport Police Department since October 25, 2000; and
WHEREAS, With him throughout have been his wife, Mollie, and his
daughter, Kaitlin, both of whom feel privileged to be a part of his life
and rejoice in his achievements; and
WHEREAS, Volunteer firefighters and fire departments not only provide
the critical service of fire protection but also engage in other activ-
ities of great benefit and importance to the communities they serve; and
WHEREAS, It takes a special dedication, a strong desire to help others
and a tireless sense of community to forsake precious time with family
and friends to respond to the signal that a neighbor is in need; Chris-
topher J. Hughes is such a firefighter; throughout his many years of
devoted service, this volunteer heroically performed, above and beyond
the call of duty, those responsibilities which define the task of fire
protection; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend outgoing Chief Christopher J. Hughes upon the occasion of his
designation for special recognition after many years of dedicated
service to the Northport Volunteer Fire Department; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to outgoing Chief Christopher J. Hughes.
