LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Kevin Birmingham upon the occasion of
his induction into the Port Jervis High School Alumni Hall of Fame

WHEREAS, Individuals who distinguish themselves in their profession and
in service to their community merit the highest commendation; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and fully in accord with its long-
standing tradition, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Kevin
Birmingham upon the occasion of his induction into the Port Jervis High
School Alumni Hall of Fame; his outstanding accomplishments were recog-
nized on Sunday, October 13, 2013, at the 2013 Port Jervis High School
Alumni Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and Banquet, which was held at
the Erie Trackside Manor in Port Jervis, New York; and
WHEREAS, The Port Jervis High School Alumni Hall of Fame annually
recognizes individuals who have achieved personal success and have made
a significant contribution to society, serving as role models to inspire
current and future generations of Port Jervis students; and
WHEREAS, Kevin Birmingham, Class of 1971, is one of the Port Jervis
City School District's most beloved educators; for 30 years this dedi-
cated man taught social studies at Port Jervis High School, and was
consistently voted favorite male teacher for over two decades by the
graduating classes; prior to his retirement in 2010, he served as the
chairperson of the Social Studies Department; and
WHEREAS, Kevin Birmingham began his illustrious education career after
earning his Bachelor of Arts from SUNY Cortland and returning to his
alma mater; over the course of his 30-year tenure, he did much to
advance secondary education in Port Jervis; and
WHEREAS, In addition to coordinating the Practical Business Education
Program with Kolmar Labs, Kevin Birmingham initiated and coached the
highly-successful interscholastic Mock Trial Team where students partic-
ipate in simulated trials to learn about the legal system; he also
served as a member of the District Leadership Team and represented the
district on the BOCES Instructional Council for 15 years; and
WHEREAS, Kevin Birmingham holds a master's degree from SUNY New Paltz,
as well as an adjunct professor's certification from Syracuse Universi-
ty; committed to creating opportunities for his students, he taught and
helped expand the Syracuse University Project Advanced Psychology
course, providing over 1,200 Port Jervis students with the chance to
earn college credits; and
WHEREAS, This accomplished man has authored or co-authored numerous
academic plans, including the District's Excellence and Accountability
Program Plan, the original Plan for Participation, and New York State's
Economics and Participation in Government Activities Curricula, an
award-winning model for school and business collaboration for the Wall
Street Journal; and
WHEREAS, Kevin Birmingham has continually demonstrated an impressive
dedication, an unparalleled devotion, and an unremitting enthusiasm for
the quality of the educational programs and opportunities offered in the
Port Jervis City School District for the benefit of its faculty,
students, and the entire community; and
WHEREAS, With him throughout have been his wife, Linda, and their two
daughters, all of whom feel privileged to be a part of his life and
rejoice in his achievements; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those individ-
uals who enhance the well-being and vitality of their community and
demonstrate a long and sustained commitment to excellence certainly have
earned the recognition and applause of all the citizens of this great
Empire State; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Kevin Birmingham upon the occasion of his induction into the Port
Jervis High School Alumni Hall of Fame; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Kevin Birmingham.
