LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring veteran Barnett Cohen upon the occasion
of the recognition of his distinguished military service at a Memorial
Day celebration on May 23, 2014

WHEREAS, Members of the Armed Services from the State of New York, who
have served so valiantly and honorably in wars in which this country's
freedom was at stake, as well as in the preservation of peace in peace-
time, deserve a special salute from this Legislative Body; and
WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to commend those
who have served in times of active conflict, as well as those who have
served in times of peace; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor veteran
Barnett Cohen upon the occasion of the recognition of his distinguished
military service at a Memorial Day celebration on May 23, 2014; and
WHEREAS, Born on August 27, 1929, in Brooklyn, New York, Barnett Cohen
began serving his country as a member of the United States Marine Corps
Reserve after graduating from Alexander Hamilton Technical/Vocational
High School, and served while attending Brooklyn College; and
WHEREAS, Barnett Cohen, affectionately known as Barney, was assigned
to the 19th Infantry Battalion in Brooklyn as a Rifleman/Radio Operator,
and was called to active duty for the Korean war in September of 1950;
and
WHEREAS, Barnett Cohen served as a Browning Automatic Rifleman at the
Infantry Demonstration Training Unit in Quantico, Virginia, schooling
the newly appointed 2nd Lieutenants; he was reassigned to the Public
Information Office as Sports Editor of the base newspaper followed by a
promotion to Sergeant, and assigned added duties as Sports Publicity
Director; and
WHEREAS, After he was honorably discharged in 1952, Barnett Cohen
returned to Brooklyn, married, was appointed to the New York City Police
Department, and moved his family to Queens; and
WHEREAS, He enjoyed a distinguished career in the Police Department
serving as a Uniformed and Plainclothes Patrolman, Precinct Squad Detec-
tive, Sergeant on Uniform Patrol, Detective Sergeant in the Narcotics
Bureau, and Precinct Squad and Detective/Supervisor of a Homicide Squad;
and
WHEREAS, Barnett Cohen is the recipient of more than 15 citations and
awards for his successful Police Department career, experiences, know-
ledge, and loyal spirit from his service in the United States Marine
Corps Reserve; and
WHEREAS, Entering private industry in 1973, Barnett Cohen continued
his investigative career as a Security Supervisor, Assistant Security
Director, and Security Director of upscale high fashion Chain Department
Stores, Gimbels and Martin's; he also worked as an investigator for
insurance companies, and private attorneys, as well as a Trial Prep
Specialist; and
WHEREAS, A member of numerous professional societies, Barnett Cohen
was designated a Certified Protection Professional by the American Soci-
ety for Industrial Security; and
WHEREAS, Today, Barney Cohen is still active in many civic, fraternal,
and veterans organizations including the Marine Corps League, and Jewish
War Veterans Post No. 764; and
WHEREAS, With him throughout have been his wife, Dolores, and their
two children, as well as seven grandchildren, and six great-grandchil-
dren, all of whom feel privileged to be a part of his life and rejoice
in his achievements; and

WHEREAS, The dedication and sacrifices of our military personnel
ensure our continued role as a Nation which embodies the ideals of
democracy, and is a defender of liberty for peoples throughout the
world; and
WHEREAS, Residents of this great State must never forget the courage
with which these men and women served their country, and must recognize
that no greater debt is owed than that owed to those who gave their
lives for their beloved Nation and to those who continue to be missing
in action; and
WHEREAS, Having exhibited his patriotism both at home and abroad,
Barnett Cohen demonstrated his love for his country and merits forever-
more, the highest respect of his State and Nation; and
WHEREAS, Our Nation's veterans deserve to be recognized, commended and
thanked by the people of the State of New York for their service and for
their dedication to their communities, their State and their Nation;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor veteran Barnett Cohen upon the occasion of the recognition of his
distinguished military service at a Memorial Day celebration on May 23,
2014; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Barnett Cohen.
