LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION memorializing Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to
proclaim April 10, 2014, Youth HIV & AIDS Awareness Day in the State of
New York, in conjunction with the observance of National Youth HIV &
AIDS Awareness Day
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize official
days that are set aside to increase awareness of serious public health
issues that affect the lives of citizens of New York State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to memorial-
ize Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to proclaim April 10, 2014, Youth HIV &
AIDS Awareness Day in the State of New York, in conjunction with the
observance of National Youth HIV & AIDS Awareness Day; and
WHEREAS, National Youth HIV & AIDS Awareness Day is a day to educate
the public about the impact of HIV and AIDS on young people, as well as
to highlight the amazing work young people are doing across the country
to fight the HIV & AIDS epidemic; and
WHEREAS, Today's youth are the first generation who have never known a
world without HIV and AIDS; in the United States, one in four new HIV
infections is among youth ages 13 to 24; and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, each month 1,000 young people are infected with
HIV and more than 76,400 young people are currently living with HIV
across the country; and
WHEREAS, While there has been much talk about an AIDS-Free Generation,
this is not possible without the Nation's youth; young people and their
allies are determined to end this epidemic, and this day is a way to
acknowledge the great progress they have made in doing so; and
WHEREAS, National Youth HIV & AIDS Awareness Day will be celebrated
throughout the United States, and is an opportunity to learn about HIV
and AIDS, how young people are affected, and to show support for the
cause; and
WHEREAS, It is imperative that there be greater public awareness of
this serious public health issue, and more must be done to increase
activity at the local, State and national levels; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
memorialize Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to proclaim April 10, 2014, Youth
HIV & AIDS Awareness Day in the State of New York, in conjunction with
the observance of National Youth HIV & AIDS Awareness Day; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to The Honorable Andrew M. Cuomo, Governor of the State of New
York.
