LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending the Great Neck Breast Cancer Coalition
upon the occasion of celebrating the 10th Anniversary of its Students
and Scientists Breast Cancer/Environment Research Program
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize that the
quality and character of life in the communities across New York State
are reflective of the concerned and dedicated efforts of those organiza-
tions and individuals who would devote themselves to the welfare of the
community and its citizenry; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commend
the Great Neck Breast Cancer Coalition upon the occasion of celebrating
the 10th Anniversary of its Students and Scientists Breast
Cancer/Environment Research Program on Monday, June 2, 2014, at the
Great Neck House, Great Neck, New York; and
WHEREAS, This commemorative event will feature Carol Frank, a journal-
ist and former Associate Editor of the GREAT NECK RECORD as the Honorary
Chairperson and Guest Speaker; in addition, alumni of the program will
speak about its influence on their lives and careers; and
WHEREAS, Since 1992, the Great Neck Breast Cancer Coalition (GNBCC)
has been dedicated to the battle against breast cancer through education
and advocacy of breast cancer research; to further protect future gener-
ations, this worthy organization also advocates breast cancer prevention
research, and educates the public on ways to avoid toxic environmental
exposures; and
WHEREAS, As part of its commitment to breast cancer research, GNBCC
founded the Students and Scientists Breast Cancer/Environment Research
Program in 2005; and
WHEREAS, Since its establishment, the program has sent more than 30
students to intern at labs researching environmental links to breast
cancer and breast cancer prevention; and
WHEREAS, This occasion presents an opportunity for this Legislative
Body to recognize and pay tribute to GNBCC and its exceptional Student
Program; and
WHEREAS, This innovative educational program provides high school
students with hands-on experience working with world-renowned environ-
mental and breast cancer researchers while they learn sophisticated
laboratory procedures in a state-of-the-art lab; the students learn how
ubiquitous toxic exposures not only create havoc in our environment, but
also contribute to chronic diseases, including cancer, learning disabil-
ities and neurological diseases; and
WHEREAS, In so effectively carrying out its mission, GNBCC has demon-
strated the value of cultivating the development of new scientific lead-
ers in order to prevent the spread of breast cancer; now, therefore, be
it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend the Great Neck Breast Cancer Coalition upon the occasion of
celebrating the 10th Anniversary of its Students and Scientists Breast
Cancer/Environment Research Program; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Great Neck Breast Cancer Coalition.
