LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending Firefighter Joseph Conlon upon the
occasion of his designation for special recognition after 50 years of
dedicated service to the Mineola Fire Department

WHEREAS, The firefighters of New York State are renowned throughout the
Nation; their reputation is synonymous with excellence in the arduous
field of fire protection and prevention; and
WHEREAS, Since the early days of "teapot steamers," the volunteer
firefighter has been the cornerstone of our great Nation's efforts to
spare us from the ravages of fire; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is proud to commend Firefighter Joseph
Conlon upon the occasion of his designation for special recognition
after 50 years of dedicated service to the Mineola Fire Department; he
was recognized at a special Gala which honored his commitment on April
25, 2014; and
WHEREAS, Firefighter Joseph Conlon's dedication to Mineola will forev-
er be linked to the Mineola Junior Fire Department, which he helped
found in 1976; juniors learn fire prevention techniques, respond to fire
calls and participate in numerous real-life drills, including wall-scal-
ing and vehicle extraction, among other techniques; and
WHEREAS, On April 14, 1964, Joseph Conlon joined Engine Company No. 1,
and was named Vice President in 1966; three years later, he was named
President, serving from 1969 until 1970, before serving as Second Lieu-
tenant from 1973 through 1975; and
WHEREAS, Firefighter Joseph Conlon made Captain in 1977, a post he
held for two years; and
WHEREAS, From 1980 to today, Firefighter Joseph Conlon serves as the
first battalion delegate for Nassau County firefighters; in 1990, he was
named Firefighter of the Year by Company No. 1; and
WHEREAS, Volunteer firefighters and fire departments not only provide
the critical service of fire protection but also engage in other activ-
ities of great benefit and importance to the communities they serve; and
WHEREAS, It takes a special dedication, a strong desire to help others
and a tireless sense of community to forsake precious time with family
and friends to respond to the signal that a neighbor is in need; Joseph
Conlon is such a firefighter; throughout 50 years of devoted service,
this volunteer heroically performed, above and beyond the call of duty,
those responsibilities which define the task of fire protection; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Firefighter Joseph Conlon for 50 years of distinguished service;
and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Firefighter Joseph Conlon.
