LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION recognizing December 19, 2014, as Rees Specht
Kindness Day in memory of Richard Edwin-Ehmer Specht and his family's
commitment to make the world a better place in his name
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize December
19, 2014, as Rees Specht Kindness Day in memory of Richard Edwin-Ehmer
Specht and his family's commitment to make the world a better place in
his name; and
WHEREAS, On October 27, 2012, the unimaginable happened to the Specht
family; their little boy, Richard Edwin-Ehmer Specht (Rees), drowned in
the pond in their backyard; and
WHEREAS, The intent of Rees Specht Kindness Day is to encourage people
to help each other and work together to accomplish small things which
make a big difference; each of us possesses the ability to do something
super: Respect each other, Respect ourselves: Rees-Specht life; the
observance of this day reminds people the importance of community,
compassion and respect; and
WHEREAS, To promote these ideals, the Specht family has established a
Memorial Scholarship as well as an awareness campaign through which
ReesSpecht Life Cards are handed out every time an act of kindness is
performed; the hope is that each recipient in turn will then carry out
an act of kindness and a chain reaction will ensue; to date, over 40,000
ReesSpecht Life Cards have been distributed, confirming that one act can
truly make this world a better place, one Rees' Piece at a time; and
WHEREAS, In addition to the Life Cards, a children's book, A LITTLE
REES SPECHT CULTIVATES KINDNESS, will be published and all proceeds from
its sales will go to the Memorial Scholarship fund; and
WHEREAS, The goal of the Specht family is to have a ReesSpecht Life
scholarship in every high school across the country; Richard Edwin-Ehmer
(Rees) Specht was a little boy whose life was brief, but whose legacy of
kindness will literally spread across the globe; and
WHEREAS, Rees Specht Kindness Day is a day on which we can remind each
other that even the smallest acts of kindness can have a tremendous
impact; on this day we should all try and work together and do the small
things that make a big difference; and
WHEREAS, All too often in our hectic world we lose sight of the little
things that enrich our lives and the lives of those around us; through
Rees Specht Kindness Day we will strive to promote these ideals through
a day set aside to remind us all of the importance of kindness,
compassion and civility towards our fellow man; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
recognize December 19, 2014, as Rees Specht Kindness Day in memory of
Richard Edwin-Ehmer Specht and his family's commitment to make the world
a better place in his name; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Specht family.
