LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Aileen McKinnon upon the occasion of her
designation for special recognition by the BWICA Educational Fund, Inc.
WHEREAS, Senior citizens bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to
the increasingly active roles they play in today's society; their past
contributions and future participation are a vital part of, and valuable
asset to, the fabric of community life and activity; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Aileen McKinnon upon the occasion of her designation for special recog-
nition by the BWICA Educational Fund, Inc. at its Outstanding Seniors in
Service Celebration to be held Wednesday, May 28, 2014, at the Brooklyn
Borough Hall Court Room, Brooklyn, New York; and
WHEREAS, The Brooklyn-wide Interagency Council on Aging (BWICA) is
recognizing the great work performed by seniors in its interagency coun-
cils and communities; Aileen McKinnon, known as Sis Evelyn, is one such
senior; and
WHEREAS, Born in Guyana, South America, Aileen McKinnon is the eldest
of 11 children; at a very young age, she adopted the vision that she
would help to secure a better life for her parents and siblings; and
WHEREAS, Aileen McKinnon attended St. Thomas High School in George-
town, Guyana; after graduating high school, she attended a commercial
school where she excelled in shorthand and typing at a speed of 150
words per minute; and
WHEREAS, At age 18, Aileen McKinnon was baptized at the John Street
Church of God; she worked at a tobacco company which was one of the
largest companies in Guyana; she was employed there as a clerk typist
and worked there until her migration to the United States on August 6,
1969; and
WHEREAS, Aileen McKinnon enrolled in Brooklyn College where she
studied interior design; in the 1970s, she joined God's Battalion of
Prayer Church and worked as a filing clerk at Ideal Corporations; and
WHEREAS, Active in her community, two years ago Aileen McKinnon began
to serve at God's Battalion of Prayer Church soup kitchen and counseled
men and women from different shelters every fourth Saturday of each
month; in addition, she serves at the JASA Institute for Senior Action;
and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the well-being and vitality of their community and have shown a
long and sustained commitment to excellence certainly have earned the
recognition and applause of all the citizens of this great Empire State;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Aileen McKinnon upon the occasion of her designation for special
recognition by the BWICA Educational Fund, Inc.; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Aileen McKinnon.
