LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Nicole and Bob Buck upon the occasion of
their designation as recipients of the Neighborhood Service Award by the
Flatbush Development Corporation
WHEREAS, Individuals who give of their time and energies and serve the
best interests of their communities are an asset beyond remuneration and
cannot be sufficiently extolled; and
WHEREAS, Nicole and Bob Buck have given not only of their time and
energies but also of their competence, intelligence and leadership and
consequently have been designated for special recognition; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Nicole and Bob Buck upon the occasion of their designation as recipients
of the Neighborhood Service Award by the Flatbush Development Corpo-
ration which was celebrated at its 39th Annual Awards Benefit on Thurs-
day, May 8, 2014, at Gargiulo's Restaurant in Coney Island, Brooklyn,
New York; and
WHEREAS, The Flatbush Development Corporation's mission is to enhance
the quality of life for all segments of the Flatbush community; it iden-
tifies and responds to neighborhood needs and concerns, proactively
creating programs and campaigns that work towards a healthy, safe and
vibrant community; its economic development, housing, youth, and immi-
gration programs serve the exceptionally diverse needs of its community;
and
WHEREAS, In summer of 1983, Nicole and Bob Buck moved from Buffalo to
Brooklyn, New York, to the house they still occupy in Fiske Terrace; and
WHEREAS, Bob Buck was appointed Director of The Brooklyn Museum, where
he remained in that post for thirteen years; and
WHEREAS, A year or so after the couple moved, Nicole Buck decided to
again start teaching French, her native tongue; she chose Brooklyn Poly
Prep and ultimately, in a career there lasting seventeen years, retired
as head of the Foreign Language Department; and
WHEREAS, Over the years, Nicole and Bob Buck have been happy in their
relatively secluded Midwood neighborhood; from the serenity of the area,
they have watched Brooklyn and the rest of the city change rapidly, and
are fortunate to be part of an island of calm in the churning sea of
urban energy that is New York City, where returning home seems always
like reaching a sort of oasis of quietude; and
WHEREAS, In addition, Nicole and Bob Buck are gratified to have worked
on the City Landmarking of their area with other friends and neighbors;
they have achieved their goal of preserving their neighborhood for
future generations to enjoy as they do; and
WHEREAS, Nicole and Bob commend the Flatbush Development Corporation
for the important role it plays in maintaining the equilibrium of the
area and working toward the betterment of this section of the city they
hold dear; and
WHEREAS, Nicole and Bob Buck have been called upon to contribute their
time and talents to countless civic and charitable endeavors and have
always given of themselves unstintingly; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the entire period of their community service, a
period of constructive involvement, Nicole and Bob Buck have stood
constant in dignity, good grace and humor; and
WHEREAS, Together, Nicole and Bob Buck raised two sons, both of whom
feel privileged to be a part of their lives and rejoice in their
achievements; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by individuals
for the benefit of others which Nicole and Bob Buck have displayed
throughout their life; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Nicole and Bob Buck upon the occasion of their designation as
recipients of the Neighborhood Service Award by the Flatbush Development
Corporation; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Nicole and Bob Buck.
