LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring the University in the High School
Program, College of Arts and Sciences, University at Albany, upon the
occasion of being selected to receive the 2014 University at Albany
President's Award for Exemplary Community Engagement on April 25, 2014

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize that the
quality and character of life in the communities across New York State
are reflective of the concerned and dedicated efforts of those organiza-
tions and individuals who would devote themselves to the welfare of the
community and its citizenry; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor the
University in the High School Program, College of Arts and Sciences,
University at Albany, in partnership with over 200 participating New
York secondary schools, upon the occasion of being selected to receive
the 2014 University at Albany President's Award for Exemplary Community
Engagement, which was celebrated at an Award Ceremony at the University
at Albany, Albany, New York; and
WHEREAS, This esteemed award honors University at Albany-community
partnerships which are enhancing public well-being in the Capital Region
and beyond; their community engagement is a collaboration between higher
education institutions and external partners in the mutually beneficial
exchange of knowledge and resources to address areas of public need; and
WHEREAS, Since 1983, the University in the High School Program has
provided a valued community-engaged service, partnering with high
schools in and beyond New York State to give their students the opportu-
nity to earn University at Albany course credits; and
WHEREAS, As a bridging experience to college, the University in the
High School Program's courses help students develop the skills and expe-
rience necessary for academic success in higher education; and
WHEREAS, The University in the High School Program staff and faculty
liaisons work with teachers, principals, and counselors to ensure that
these courses match the rigor of their campus counterparts; and
WHEREAS, Through the University in the High School Program, students
can also participate in the Science Research Program which cultivates
students as future researchers, and operates in three states; and
WHEREAS, Additionally, the reduced course fees for the University in
the High School Program make earning college credit more affordable for
students and their families; and
WHEREAS, From its initial offerings in foreign languages, the Univer-
sity in the High School Program has expanded to over 30 subject areas
spanning 23 academic departments at the University at Albany; and
WHEREAS, In 2012 to 2013, the University in the High School Program
offered over 1,000 classes in more than 200 high schools, and over 8,000
students were involved, as well as almost 550 participating teachers;
and
WHEREAS, It is the practice of this Legislative Body that when indi-
viduals and organizations of such noble aims and accomplishments are
brought to our attention, they should be celebrated and recognized by
all the citizens of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor the University in the High School Program, College of Arts and
Sciences, University at Albany, upon the occasion of being selected to
receive the 2014 University at Albany President's Award for Exemplary
Community Engagement on April 25, 2014; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the University in the High School Program, College of Arts
and Sciences, University at Albany.
