LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION mourning the death of Thomas M. Jacobs, distin-
guished citizen and devoted member of his community

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
citizens of the State of New York whose lifework and civic endeavor
served to enhance the quality of life in their communities and the great
State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Thomas M. Jacobs of Glens Falls, New York, died on Thursday,
April 10, 2014 at the age of 87; and
WHEREAS, The son of Milton and Minna Wagner Jacobs, Thomas M. Jacobs
was born August 14, 1926, in Montreal, Canada; shortly after his birth,
he and his family moved to Berlin, New Hampshire; and
WHEREAS, Thomas M. Jacobs graduated from Gould Academy in Bethel,
Maine in 1944, and enlisted as a member of the United States Army where
he served honorably in Okinawa and Japan for two years; and
WHEREAS, Upon returning from military service, this esteemed man
enrolled in Middlebury College, where he graduated with a degree in
geology with honors; and
WHEREAS, In August 1949, Thomas M. Jacobs married his Middlebury
College classmate, Marilyn Mulholland of Wellsville, New York; and
WHEREAS, From early childhood, Thomas M. Jacobs was an avid skier,
proficient in all four disciplines of ski racing, including slalom,
downhill, cross-country and jumping; he competed successfully all
through high school and college, won skimeister trophies, and earned a
place on the Middlebury team that won the 1948 National Collegiate Cham-
pionships; and
WHEREAS, While working on his masters degree at the University of
Colorado, Thomas M. Jacobs was selected to join the United States Ski
Team at the 1952 Olympic Games in Oslo, Norway; he placed 21st in the
Nordic combined jumping and cross-country event; and
WHEREAS, After the Olympics, he was hired as Colorado University's
first full-time ski coach; during his tenure as ski coach, he served as
chairman of the NCAA committee on skiing and authored the NCAA rules;
and
WHEREAS, Thomas M. Jacobs became the executive director of the
National Ski Association after finishing his coaching career; in addi-
tion, he served as director of the Steamboat Springs Chamber of Commerce
and Winter Sports Club; and
WHEREAS, In 1958, Thomas M. Jacobs moved with his family to Glens
Falls, where he was employed as a sales representative for Finch & Pruyn
Paper Company for 11 years; and
WHEREAS, This remarkable man remained active in the world of skiing,
owning the Inside Edge Ski and Bike shop and a catalog business, Reli-
able Racing Supply; he also founded the ski school at West Mountain, the
Southern Adirondack Racing League and the Friends of Coles Woods; and
WHEREAS, Thomas M. Jacobs distinguished himself in his profession and
by his sincere dedication and substantial contribution to the skiing
community; he was recognized for his many contributions with an
induction into the National Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame in 2007; and
WHEREAS, Thomas M. Jacobs's commitment to excellence, and his spirit
of humanity, carried over into all fields of enterprise, including char-
itable and civic endeavors; and
WHEREAS, Predeceased by his sister, Louise Richter, Thomas M. Jacobs
is survived by his wife, Marilyn; his three children, Jeffrey, Diana,
and John (Susan Ide); his seven grandchildren, Jocelin (Jason), Courtney
(Ernest), Thembi (Jamal), Zuri (Justin), Jena, John "Jake" Jacobs and
Hannah (Thye); as well as 12 great-grandchildren; and

WHEREAS, Armed with a humanistic spirit and imbued with a sense of
compassion, Thomas M. Jacobs leaves behind a legacy which will long
endure the passage of time and will remain as a comforting memory to all
he served and befriended; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
mourn the death of Thomas M. Jacobs, distinguished citizen and devoted
member of his community; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the family of Thomas M. Jacobs.
