LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Dr. David Hobby upon the occasion of his
designation as the recipient of a 2014 SUNY Chancellor's Award for
Excellence in Faculty Service

WHEREAS, It is the practice of this Legislative Body to take note of and
publicly acknowledge individuals of remarkable integrity and character
whose endeavors have enhanced the quality of education in the great
State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing tradition, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Dr.
David Hobby, Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics, upon
the occasion of his designation as the recipient of a 2014 SUNY
Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Faculty Service, to be celebrated
at SUNY New Paltz's first faculty meeting, and the first classified
staff gathering in the fall of 2014; and
WHEREAS, Faculty and staff who receive the Chancellor's Award for
Excellence have served their students, fellow faculty and staff, campus-
es, and communities with the utmost distinction, and have demonstrated
extraordinary dedication and service to SUNY New Paltz; Dr. David Hobby
is one such individual; and
WHEREAS, For the last 28 years, Dr. David Hobby has given consistently
superlative service to SUNY New Paltz, most notably in curriculum devel-
opment, assessment, and student advising; and
WHEREAS, Dr. David Hobby has willingly and generously taken on extra
responsibilities, such as creating the College Curriculum Committee,
serving as a founding member of the College's General Education Board
and the College-wide Assessment Advisory Council, and being the first
presiding officer of the School of Science and Engineering; and
WHEREAS, In 2003 to 2006 and 2006 to 2009, Dr. David Hobby served as
chair of the Department of Mathematics for two terms; in addition, he
has been the main liaison between Mathematics and the Department of
Secondary Education for the past several years; and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, Dr. David Hobby has chaired and participated in
numerous committees, both at the department and college levels, and has
been an overall respectable citizen of the institution; and
WHEREAS, Credit for SUNY New Paltz's strong General Education curric-
ulum, and its progress in advancing assessment of student learning
campus-wide goes in part to Dr. David Hobby for his service as founding
chair of both the College Curriculum Committee and General Education
Board, and as a member of the College-wide Assessment Advisory Commit-
tee, the Liberal Education Ad Hoc Committee and its successor, the
Liberal Education Committee; and
WHEREAS, A masterful tactician who is excellent with meeting deadlines
and completing necessary paperwork to make sure things run smoothly, Dr.
David Hobby's service on these committees has contributed to the devel-
opment of SUNY New Paltz's General Education curriculum; to students'
success in majors which build on knowledge, skills, and competencies
acquired in General Education; and to the significant strides as a
campus community in making evidence-based decisions; and
WHEREAS, Dr. David Hobby distinguishes himself through his exceptional
levels of motivation, innovation, and initiative; he demonstrates a true
affection for SUNY New Paltz and a care and concern for making it better
for students; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to commend the
efforts of individuals such as Dr. David Hobby, who, by providing their
skills and talents to our schools, work to support our proud tradition
of public education; and

WHEREAS, Dr. David Hobby has clearly had an enduring impact on the
youth of SUNY New Paltz, as well as on the community-at-large, and
accordingly merits recognition and applause for his impressive dedi-
cation to others; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Dr. David Hobby upon the occasion of his designation as the recip-
ient of a 2014 SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Faculty
Service; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Dr. David Hobby.
