LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Dr. Sue Books upon the occasion of her
designation as the recipient of a 2014 SUNY Chancellor's Award for
Excellence in Teaching

WHEREAS, it is the practice of this Legislative Body to take note of and
publicly acknowledge individuals of remarkable integrity and character
whose endeavors have enhanced the quality of education in the great
State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing tradition, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Dr.
Sue Books, Professor in the Secondary Education Department, upon the
occasion of her designation as the recipient of a 2014 SUNY Chancellor's
Award for Excellence in Teaching, to be celebrated at SUNY New Paltz's
first faculty meeting, and the first classified staff gathering in the
fall of 2014; and
WHEREAS, Faculty and staff who receive the Chancellor's Award for
Excellence have served their students, fellow faculty and staff, campus-
es, and communities with the utmost distinction, and have demonstrated
extraordinary dedication and service to SUNY New Paltz; Dr. Sue Books
is one such individual; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Sue Books is known for creating a dialogic learning envi-
ronment that invites students to become passionate learners; and
WHEREAS, During her illustrious education career, Dr. Sue Books expe-
riences in global settings have prompted her to look at her discipline
and teaching through new, international lenses, and her approach has
already influenced understandings of diversity among her faculty
colleagues in the School of Education; and
WHEREAS, A course such as Education across Borders takes on new mean-
ing as Dr. Sue Books has taught and studied in South Africa, Iceland,
Brazil, China, and Japan; she continues to seek opportunities to deepen
her theoretical knowledge through educational work in several countries;
and
WHEREAS, In addition, Dr. Sue Books exhibits an extraordinary commit-
ment to her students; she is not a stilted academic, but genuinely
interested in all of her students on personal levels; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Sue Books also earns praise for her capacity to create
rigorous learning environments; she maintains high standards with
authentic assessments, and takes the time to offer genuine critique
which goes much further than a simple letter grade; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to commend the
efforts of individuals such as Dr. Sue Books, who, by providing their
skills and talents to our schools, work to support our proud tradition
of public education; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Sue Books has clearly had an enduring impact on the youth
of SUNY New Paltz, as well as on the community-at-large, and accordingly
merits recognition and applause for his impressive dedication to others;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Dr. Sue Books upon the occasion of her designation as the recipi-
ent of a 2014 SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching; and be
it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Dr. Sue Books.
