LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Charlene Benton upon the occasion of her
designation for special recognition by the United Tenants of Albany on
June 11, 2014

WHEREAS, Individuals who give of their time and energies and serve the
best interests of their communities are an asset beyond remuneration and
cannot be sufficiently extolled; and
WHEREAS, Charlene Benton has given not only of her time and energies
but also of her competence, intelligence and leadership and consequently
has been designated for special honor; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Charlene
Benton upon the occasion of her designation for special recognition by
the United Tenants of Albany, to be celebrated at its 41st Annual Meet-
ing on Wednesday, June 11, 2014, at St. Vincent De Paul Parish Hall,
Albany, New York; and
WHEREAS, Charlene Benton has been called upon to contribute her time
and talents to countless civic and charitable endeavors and has always
given of herself unstintingly; and
WHEREAS, This exemplary woman is being recognized by United Tenants of
Albany for her leadership and advocacy against Global Partners' plans to
expand crude oil processing at the Port of Albany; and
WHEREAS, Charlene Benton is the President of the Ezra Prentice Tenants
Association; Ezra Prentice is a public housing development located near
the Port of Albany; and
WHEREAS, With a concern for the health and safety of the residents of
her development, as well as the downtown neighborhoods, Charlene Benton
spoke out and organized against the crude oil plan which included
constructing a new boiler facility to heat oil on trains as part of the
company's effort to increase crude shipments through Albany; and
WHEREAS, Charlene Benton's steadfast commitment and hard work resulted
in Albany County issuing a moratorium on the processing of crude oil at
the Port pending a public health investigation by the Albany County
Health Department; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the entire period of her community service, a
period of constructive involvement, Charlene Benton has stood constant
in dignity, good grace and humor; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an individ-
ual for the benefit of others which Charlene Benton has displayed
throughout her life; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Charlene Benton upon the occasion of her designation for special
recognition by the United Tenants of Albany on June 11, 2014; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Charlene Benton.
