LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION mourning the death of Mortimer A. Sullivan, Jr.,
distinguished citizen and devoted member of his community
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
citizens of the State of New York whose lifework and civic endeavor
served to enhance the quality of life in their communities and the great
State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Mortimer A. Sullivan, Jr. of Orchard Park, New York died on
Tuesday, May 27, 2014; and
WHEREAS, A graduate of the University at Buffalo, Mortimer A. Sulli-
van, Jr. earned his degree in Psychology and completed Western New
York's first college accredited courses in law enforcement training; he
was also the first commander of the University's Air Force ROTC Corps of
Cadets, where he was commissioned upon graduation; and
WHEREAS, After graduating from the University at Buffalo, Mortimer A.
Sullivan, Jr. began his services in the United States Air Force at
Sampson's Air Base in Seneca Lake, New York, and was later accepted into
the Air Force Office of Special Investigations mobilization reserves
program; he would then go on to graduate from the AFOSI Senior Investi-
gators Counterintelligence School and The Air War College; and
WHEREAS, Mortimer A. Sullivan, Jr. also served as a liaison for addi-
tional United States and Canadian agencies and carried out hundreds of
background investigations as well as criminal and fraud investigations;
he had numerous briefings on sabotage, espionage and terrorism for
Federal Agencies and the United States Air Force; and
WHEREAS, Widely recognized for his service to the United States,
Mortimer A. Sullivan, Jr. received the Legion of Merit, Meritorious
Service Medal, Army and Air Force Commendation Medals, and the New York
State Conspicuous Service Cross; and
WHEREAS, Mortimer A. Sullivan, Jr. was admitted to the New York State
Bar in 1964, and was later appointed as a Government Appeal Agent for
the Selective Service System; and
WHEREAS, In addition, he co-founded and became a charter member, serv-
ing for 22 years in the Erie County Sheriff's Scientific Reserve, where
he provided invaluable expertise and technical support to Erie County's
premier law enforcement agency; and
WHEREAS, Mortimer A. Sullivan, Jr. distinguished himself in his
profession and by his sincere dedication and substantial contribution to
the welfare of his community; he was instrumental in the success of
Cradle Beach, a camp for underprivileged and special needs children
located on the shores of Lake Erie; and
WHEREAS, For 25 years, Mortimer A. Sullivan, Jr. chaired the Episcopal
Diocese of Western New York Committee on Constitutions and Canons, and
in 1993, he received the Bishop's Award for Ministry of Laity; and
WHEREAS, Mortimer A. Sullivan, Jr.'s commitment to excellence, and his
spirit of humanity, carried over into all fields of enterprise, includ-
ing charitable and civic endeavors; and
WHEREAS, Mortimer A. Sullivan, Jr. was the beloved husband of Maryanne
(Calella); loving father of Mark A. (Suzanne), Michael J. (Michele) and
the late Elizabeth and Mary Sullivan; grandfather of Julie E., Jill M.,
Alexander M. and Katherine H. Sullivan; and brother of the late Martha
Hamilton; and
WHEREAS, Armed with a humanistic spirit, imbued with a sense of
compassion, and comforted by a loving family, Mortimer A. Sullivan, Jr.
leaves behind a legacy which will long endure the passage of time and
will remain as a comforting memory to all he served and befriended; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
mourn the death of Mortimer A. Sullivan, Jr., distinguished citizen and
devoted member of his community; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the family of Mortimer A. Sullivan, Jr.
