LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Detective Sergeant Michael Torrillo upon
the occasion of his retirement from the Amherst Police Department after
46 years of dedicated service

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and honor
those distinguished officers and citizens who would devote themselves to
public service, demonstrating great courage and diligence in providing
for the care and welfare of the citizens of their communities and this
great Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Within every community of the State of New York there are
certain individuals who, by virtue of their commitment and dedication,
command the respect and admiration of their community for their exem-
plary contributions and service on behalf of others; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Detective
Sergeant Michael Torrillo upon the occasion of his retirement from the
Amherst Police Department after 46 years of dedicated service, to be
celebrated with a Retirement Party in his honor on Thursday, June 26,
2014, at Samuel's Grande Manor, Clarence, New York; and
WHEREAS, With more than four decades of experience, Detective Sergeant
Michael Torrillo, the longest serving member of the Amherst Police
Department, will officially retire on May 30, 2014; and
WHEREAS, Appointed as an Officer in September of 1968, Detective
Sergeant Michael Torrillo served under four chiefs throughout his 46
year tenure; and
WHEREAS, Detective Sergeant Michael Torrillo's first assignment in the
department was working in the Patrol Division in 1968; as a new patrol-
man, one of his early duties was working with other officers to maintain
order during riots at the University of Buffalo; and
WHEREAS, In 1972, Detective Sergeant Michael Torrillo was reassigned
to the newly formed Traffic Unit, where he served as a Motorcycle Offi-
cer and Traffic Accident Investigator; later that decade, in 1979, he
was promoted to the position of Detective, and then in 1992, he was
promoted to his current position of Detective Sergeant; and
WHEREAS, Detective Sergeant Michael Torrillo attended the FBI Training
Academy in 1987, where he spent three months in Quantico, Virginia to
learn specialized training alongside 250 other police officers from all
over the world; and
WHEREAS, Detective Sergeant Michael Torrillo's illustrious career has
been focused on youth and safety, being involved with the DARE program,
Youth Court, and other crime prevention programs; he is currently
assigned to the Special Victims Unit, where he investigates offenses,
including juvenile crimes; and
WHEREAS, Active within his community, Detective Sergeant Michael
Torrillo is a past president of the State Juvenile Officers Association,
and has also been actively involved in the Amherst Police Foundation;
and
WHEREAS, In addition, he has assisted in the development of the Alco-
hol and Drug Awareness Program, which is now currently mandated for
parents of incoming freshmen in Amherst Central School District; he
serves as a panel member during presentations of the program; and
WHEREAS, A certified police instructor, Detective Sergeant Michael
Torrillo has taught several training segments at the Erie County Law
Enforcement Academy during the Basic Academy for Recruits and the Super-
visory Training Course; and
WHEREAS, With him throughout have been his twin daughters, one son,
and eight grandchildren, all of whom feel privileged to be a part of his
life and rejoice in his achievements; and

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those dedicated
public servants who unselfishly devote their lives to the preservation
of order and the protection of others are worthy and due full praise for
their commitment and noble endeavors; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Detective Sergeant Michael Torrillo upon the occasion of his
retirement from the Amherst Police Department after 46 years of dedi-
cated service; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Detective Sergeant Michael Torrillo.
