LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Firefighter Alexander Hagan upon the
occasion of his retirement after more than 40 years of distinguished
service to the New York City Fire Department
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and honor
those distinguished citizens of this great Empire State who have devoted
themselves to faithfully serving the best interests of their community
and the needs of its residents; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Firefighter Alexander Hagan upon the occasion of his retirement after
more than 40 years of distinguished service to the New York City Fire
Department; and
WHEREAS, Citizens across our State and Nation are inspired by and
indebted to our valiant firefighters who exhibit courage and bravery
every day in the course of their duties; and
WHEREAS, Firefighters exemplify the power of human compassion and the
strength of the American spirit through actions of the most heroic
magnitude; their sacrifices and their selfless dedication merit tribute
and recognition by all citizens of this great country; and
WHEREAS, Many firefighters have lost their lives to save the lives of
others; each and every day, they face danger and peril without fear and
perform their job with the utmost concern and professionalism; and
WHEREAS, Born on December 27, 1949, Alexander Hagan grew up in
Bayside, Queens; he displayed extraordinary scholastic achievement and
entered Queens College at the age of 16 while paying for his education
with his salary earned as a union steamfitter for Local 638; and
WHEREAS, After spending some time honorably serving in the United
States Army Reserves, Alexander Hagan was appointed to the New York City
Fire Department (FDNY) on September 29, 1973, and was assigned to Engine
Company 36; a week after his appointment, he married his high school
sweetheart, Mary Ann; and
WHEREAS, Alexander Hagan began his illustrious 41 year career as a
union leader through his election as a Company Delegate for IAFF Local
94, Uniformed Firefighters Association, as a probationary firefighter;
and
WHEREAS, Promoted to Lieutenant on March 31, 1983 and assigned to
Ladder 44 Alexander Hagan immediately began his service to the New York
City Fire Officers when he was elected as a union Delegate for Battalion
17 in UFOA Local 854, a position he held for more than three decades;
and
WHEREAS, After leading in Ladder 44 and Battalion 17 for more than
seven years, Alexander Hagan was promoted to Captain on September 22,
1990; he earned the respect of his new superiors and was entrusted with
leading another prominent company as the Company Commander of Ladder 43;
and
WHEREAS, Subsequently, Alexander Hagan's leadership was immediately
recognized and he was elected as a UFOA Local 854 Delegate in Battalion
10; in addition, he has been cited and awarded medals six times through-
out his career for his unwavering bravery in the performance of his
duties, including an FDNY Class Three Medal; and
WHEREAS, In doing his share to rebuild the FDNY, Alexander Hagan
taught Leadership, Captains Development, First Line Supervisor's Train-
ing, Incident Command School, Community Emergency Response Team, Terror-
ism, and Probationary Firefighter School; and
WHEREAS, Alexander Hagan ran for election as a Captain's Represen-
tative and took office on the Executive Board of Trustees of UFOA in
September of 2008; one year later, he was elected President with the
unanimous vote of his fellow Board Members; and
WHEREAS, In addition, he has served as the Chairman of numerous
Committees for Local 854 some of which include, Special Projects, Publi-
cations, Municipal Labor Committee/Uniformed Coalition, Central Labor
Council, AFL-CIO, EMS-CFR-D, and the FDNY/NYPD Superior Officer's Alli-
ance; and
WHEREAS, Whether it was in the creation of a Retiree Meeting, or
inspiring and mobilizing the political might of the 7,500 active and
retired fire officers to engage in political action, Alexander Hagan has
consistently exceeded expectations with zeal, energy and passion; and
WHEREAS, With him throughout have been his wife, Mary Ann, their three
children and five grandchildren, all of whom feel privileged to be a
part of his life and rejoice in his achievements; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the occurrence of such a compassionate blend-
ing of strength, leadership, intellect, and commitment as that demon-
strated by over a lifetime of sacrifice and dedication to others; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Firefighter Alexander Hagan upon the occasion of his retirement
after more than 40 years of distinguished service to the New York City
Fire Department; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Firefighter Alexander Hagan.
