LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Betty Smith for her outstanding volun-
teerism and commitment to the St. John School of Goshen, New York, after
more than 20 years of distinguished service

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to call attention to
the dedicated efforts of those individuals from across the State of New
York who volunteer their time and energies in service to the community;
and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Betty Smith for her outstanding volunteerism and commitment to the St.
John School of Goshen, New York, after more than 20 years of distin-
guished service; and
WHEREAS, Volunteerism is an essential element of all societies; it
provides a way in which the human values of community, caring and serv-
ing can be sustained and strengthened; and
WHEREAS, A mother of six, Betty Smith has volunteered for St. John
School for more than two decades; she will be leaving in June of 2014,
as her youngest daughter is graduating; and
WHEREAS, Throughout her volunteerism with St. John School, Betty Smith
has ran the School Lottery and organized the School Yearbook for many
years; and
WHEREAS, In addition, she stuffed Wednesday envelopes for every
student each week, helped order text books, and organized and collected
box tops and soup labels; and
WHEREAS, Betty Smith was a member of the Parent Guild and has volun-
teered at almost every school fundraiser for the past 21 years; and
WHEREAS, The heart of the St. John Basketball and Cheer program for
the past nine years, Betty Smith was instrumental in its success, coor-
dinating the collection fees, ordering the uniforms, organizing the
annual sports awards banquet, and managing the kitchen; and
WHEREAS, With her throughout have been her six beautiful children,
Maureen, Meaghan, James, Bridget, Bernadette and Rosemary, all of whom
feel privileged to be a part of her life and rejoice in her achieve-
ments; and
WHEREAS, Volunteerism promotes family and community solidarity; most
importantly, people who volunteer their time in civic and charitable
endeavors inspire others to the call of volunteerism; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an individ-
ual for the benefit of others which Betty Smith has displayed throughout
her life; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Betty Smith for her outstanding volunteerism and commitment to the
St. John School of Goshen, New York, after more than 20 years of
distinguished service; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Betty Smith.
