LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 40th Anniversary of QUEEN
CENTRAL NEWS
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
those illustrious journalistic entities which have endured, diligently
and consistently recording the history of their communities, highlight-
ing local news, and bringing news of the larger world to their readers;
and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the 40th Anniversary of QUEEN CENTRAL NEWS, of Camden, New York;
and
WHEREAS, The QUEEN CENTRAL NEWS (QCN) has served Central New York
communities in Oswego and Oneida counties for 40 years; with a circu-
lation of 8,400 weekly newspapers, most of which are distributed door to
door, QCN is the oldest and most comprehensive source of local news in
the area, and is the official newspaper of the Towns of Camden, Vienna,
Florence, Osceola and Constantia, the Village of Camden; and co-official
newspaper of the Town of Williamstown, the Camden Central School
District, the Altmar-Parish-Williamstown Central School District, and
the Town of Amboy; and
WHEREAS, QUEEN CENTRAL NEWS was created by Jim Van Winkle, John Van
Schoick, George Cady, and Dave Farnsworth Sr., on May 1, 1974, when the
local paper, the CAMDEN ADVANCE JOURNAL, was sold to people outside of
the community; and
WHEREAS, Three of QCN's founders had worked for the ADVANCE JOURNAL
and they purchased it in 1975, combining it with QCN in 1981; and
WHEREAS, QCN's name refers to its home base of Camden, which is known
as "the Queen Village"; "Central" represents the surrounding areas, and
"News" keeps everyone involved; and
WHEREAS, Today, QCN is led by Jim Van Winkle, and his wife, Josie, and
staffed largely by members of the Van Winkle family, including daughters
Darla Woodcock and Dori Monteith, grandson Kyle Woodcock, and grand-
daughter Amber Hamblin McNabb; the staff also includes photographer Ted
Chase; and
WHEREAS, QCN is deeply committed to the communities it serves, and
justifiably proud of its long history of connecting and sharing the
stories of the residents and events affecting its readers; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when organiza-
tions of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
the great State of New York; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 40th Anniversary of QUEEN CENTRAL NEWS; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Jim Van Winkle, publisher of QUEEN CENTRAL NEWS.
