LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 250th Anniversary of the Town
of Argyle

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to honor and commem-
orate the proud and distinguished histories of the communities which
comprise the noble body of this great Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the 250th Anniversary of the Town of Argyle; and
WHEREAS, The Town of Argyle, comprising about 35,000 acres of land,
lies close to the center of Washington County between the Adirondacks
and the Green Mountains of Vermont; the patent of Argyle was granted
March 13,1764, and it is one of the first town's founded in Washington
County; and
WHEREAS, The area that is now Argyle, New York at the time of the
town's formation was in Albany County, and later, due to boundary chang-
es, became part of Charlotte County; in 1784, Charlotte County became
known as Washington County; and
WHEREAS, As the name of the town suggests, most early settlers came
from Scotland, and were fleeing religious persecution; the industrious
Scots took advantage of Argyle's natural clay resources and made the
brick from which they built their homes themselves; and
WHEREAS, During the past 200 years there have been many changes in all
aspects of the lives of Argyle's community; despite all of these chang-
es, however, Argyle remains essentially a rural community, and many
descendants of the town's original settlers are still living in the town
in some of the grand old homes that grace the area; and
WHEREAS, The roads have been modernized to accommodate heavy traffic,
yet there are still no public transportation facilities nor traffic
lights; many of the local residents travel daily to their places of
employment in other communities, and less than one hour will take its
residents to innumerable sites for shopping and recreation; and
WHEREAS, Argyle is fortunate to have local employment opportunities in
both large and small businesses; The National Catheter Corp., Sherwood
Medical Industries and Sheridan Catheter Corp. all manufacture medical
supplies in Argyle; these companies employ hundreds and are a key to
Argyle's economic base; and
WHEREAS, Argyle Central School District's 16 schools were centralized
in 1938, and with the opening of the new addition in 1975, Argyle
Central School now has an enrollment of over 900 students; and
WHEREAS, The Argyle community is well served by volunteers who work
for the J.A. Bar Hose Co. and the Argyle Emergency Squad, as well as the
Pleasant Valley Infirmary; the infirmary, established in 1827 as the
County House, is still providing quality health care to the entire coun-
ty; and
WHEREAS, A long-standing community landmark, the Argyle Free Library
is a member of the Southern Adirondack Library System, and has been
housed in one of the oldest buildings in Argyle since 1927; and
WHEREAS, Argyle also houses five churches that serve the religious
needs of the community's residents; the United Presbyterian Church,
United Methodist Church, South Argyle United Presbyterian Church, North
Argyle Community Church and North Argyle United Presbyterian Church have
strong congregations within the community, some of which were organized
during the town's infant years; and
WHEREAS, Today, the Town of Argyle's population is approximately
3,688; recent years have brought an upswing in its population as many

people have found this peaceful, rural community which is still close to
employment and commercial centers quite an attractive place to live; and
WHEREAS, Of historic origin, and remaining fruitful over the ebb and
flow of decades of growth and change, the Town of Argyle continues to
provide the quintessential quality of life for its residents; and
WHEREAS, The residents of Argyle, New York have a bright outlook for
the future of their community, which remains a beautiful place in which
to live and raise a family; and
WHEREAS, In recognition of Argyle's rich history and enduring contrib-
ution to the State of New York, this Legislative Body is proud to pay
tribute to this spirited town upon the occasion of its 250th Anniver-
sary; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 250th Anniversary of the Town of Argyle, recognizing the
significance of the role it continues to play in the life of the commu-
nity of the State of New York; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Town of Argyle.
