LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION mourning the death of Francis E. Hurd, distin-
guished citizen and devoted member of his community

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
citizens of the State of New York whose lifework and civic endeavor
served to enhance the quality of life in their communities and the great
State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Francis E. "Fran" Hurd of Indian Hills in Waterloo, New York,
died on Tuesday, April 29, 2014, at the age of 90; and
WHEREAS, A longtime resident of Lodi, Fran Hurd was born in Borden,
New York, on February 2, 1924, a son of the late Walter B. and Cora
(Williams) Hurd; his family later moved to Lawrenceville, Pennsylvania,
where he received his education; and
WHEREAS, Fran Hurd received his draft letter in 1943, at the age of
17, and the day after his 18th birthday, he entered active duty in the
United States Army; as a Corporal Technician in the motor pool of the
291st Combat Engineers during WWII, he was instrumental in the invasion
of Utah Beach; he was discharged in 1945 with five Bronze Stars; and
WHEREAS, Fran Hurd recently contributed to a documentary on the Ameri-
can Heroes Channel, Against the Odds-Those Damned Engineers; during his
years overseas, he corresponded with a young girl in Lodi, Olive Baker;
upon his return in 1945, they began dating and were married four months
later; and
WHEREAS, Fran Hurd distinguished himself in his profession and by his
sincere dedication and substantial contribution to the welfare of his
community; and
WHEREAS, For more than 30 years, Fran Hurd worked as a driver for
Close Oil Company in Lodi; he was instrumental in local politics, and
served as the Lodi Town Supervisor from 1972-1990; he continued working
at the county highway department and then at the Seneca County office
building; and
WHEREAS, Fran Hurd's commitment to excellence, and his spirit of
humanity, carried over into all fields of enterprise, including charita-
ble and civic endeavors; and
WHEREAS, Recently, Fran Hurd was honored by the Seneca County Board of
Supervisors for his years of dedicated service to Seneca County; and
WHEREAS, Fran Hurd was a Life Member of the Lodi Fire Department,
South Seneca Sportsmen's Club and the Ovid VFW Post No. 6200; he enjoyed
many camping trips with his family, hunting and fishing; he will be
fondly remembered for his devotion to his wife and family, his warm
smile and friendly handshake; and
WHEREAS, Predeceased by his loving wife of 61 years, Olive, a brother,
William Hurd and sisters, Beatrice Kohler and Marjorie Colgrove, Francis
E. Hurd is survived by a son, Charles (Linda) Hurd; a daughter, Connie
(Paul) Polce; grandchildren, Andrew (Kelly) Hurd, Matthew Hurd, Paula
(Adam) Chard and Sally (Brian Procopio) Polce; and great grandchildren,
Mackenzie, Mercedes, Miranda and Mattia Hurd, Mason and Jackson Chard,
and his companion Sharon Vreeland, as well as many nieces and nephews;
and
WHEREAS, Armed with a humanistic spirit and imbued with a sense of
compassion, Francis E. Hurd leaves behind a legacy which will long
endure the passage of time and will remain as a comforting memory to all
he served and befriended; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
mourn the death of Francis E. Hurd, distinguished citizen and devoted
member of his community; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the family of Francis E. Hurd.
