LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION recognizing Thursday, April 24, 2014, as Take Our
Daughters And Sons To Work Day

WHEREAS, Educational programs designed to promote career exploration and
enhance the self-worth of the youth in our communities are deserving of
the highest praise and recognition; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to recognize Thursday,
April 24, 2014, as Take Our Daughters And Sons To Work Day; this year's
theme is "Plant a Seed, Grow a Future"; and
WHEREAS, Take Our Daughters And Sons To Work Day, which occurs on the
fourth Thursday of April every year, is an educational program in the
United States and Canada that revolves around parents taking their chil-
dren to work for one day; and
WHEREAS, Founded in New York City by Gloria Steinem and the Ms. Foun-
dation for Women in 1993, the Take Our Daughters To Work program was
created as a response to research that showed that, by the eighth grade,
many girls were dropping out of school, had low self esteem, and lacked
confidence; and
WHEREAS, Take Our Daughters And Sons To Work Day is the successor to
Take Our Daughters To Work Day, which, in 2003, was expanded to include
sons so that boys who also faced many of the same challenges as girls
could be involved in the program; and
WHEREAS, The mission of Take Our Daughters And Sons To Work Day is to
develop innovative strategies that assist in helping girls and boys to
overcome societal barriers to reach their full potential; and
WHEREAS, Take Our Daughters And Sons To Work Day helps our youth learn
about career opportunities and life options in a positive way; in addi-
tion, it encourages our youth to have an active imagination, to set
goals, and to take more control of their future; and
WHEREAS, This year, Take Our Daughters And Sons To Work Foundation
reflects on its 21 years of experience, education and empowering youth
of America; since its inception, the spirit of those first involved in
its creation has been with its organizers and participants alike in
their tireless work to envision creative and groundbreaking ways to
engage the youth of America in the realization of their hopes and
dreams; and
WHEREAS, "Plant a Seed, Grow a Future" is a celebration of the renewed
success of the program year after year, and suggests that an even bigger
and brighter future is ahead for all our nation's daughters and sons;
and
WHEREAS, It reminds our youth to be brave as they dream seemingly
impossible dreams, explore new challenges, and attain the success they
have always hoped for in education, work, home, and in their communi-
ties; and
WHEREAS, The 21st Anniversary celebrates the unique contributions of
the Take Our Daughters And Sons To Work Day program offered to our youth
and the American workforce for the past 21 years; suggests working
together encouraging youth to create new pathways towards opportunity
and success through participation in Take Our Daughters And Sons To
Work; provides an opportunity not only to reflect on such a landmark
achievement, but also to use that reflection as a stepping stone to
continue the important work of education and empowering the youth of
America; and invites workplaces to share their experiences, both in the
importance of education and what it takes to empower others to reach
their potential; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to acknowledge
significant days that are set aside to strengthen the connection between

education and work and relationships between parents and their children;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
recognize Thursday, April 24, 2014, as Take Our Daughters And Sons To
Work Day; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Take Our Daughters And Sons To Work Foundation.
