LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the Corn-
ing-Baron Steuben Chapter of the National Society of Daughters of the
American Revolution

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize those
outstanding organizations within our communities that, year after year,
diligently work to preserve the history of New York State and the United
States, encourage patriotism, and promote the advancement of education;
and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the 100th Anniversary of the Corning-Baron Steuben Chapter of the
National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution, to be cele-
brated on Saturday, May 10, 2014; and
WHEREAS, The National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution
(NSDAR) was founded in 1890, and is headquartered in Washington, D.C. as
a non-profit, non-political volunteer women's service organization that
is dedicated to promoting patriotism, preserving American history, and
securing America's future through the education of all children; and
WHEREAS, The Corning Chapter NSDAR was organized in Corning, New York
on April 4, 1914, at the home of Mary (Bushnell) Sebring who was subse-
quently appointed Organizing Regent of the new chapter by the National
Society; there were 14 women present for their first meeting, 12 of whom
became the first members of this illustrious organization; and
WHEREAS, Membership increased to 27 members by November 7, 1914,
during which time officers were elected and all members voted to call
the chapter, Corning Chapter; the name remained for 78 years; and
WHEREAS, Mary Sebring remained Organizing Regent for 14 years, and in
1926, a chair was placed in Constitutional Hall in Washington, D.C. in
her honor; and
WHEREAS, By 1936, membership had grown to 77 members, and through the
years, the Corning Chapter NSDAR carried on a patriotic program, gave
support to the war effort during the second World War, and ensured the
graves of fallen Revolutionary War Soldiers were properly marked; and
WHEREAS, The Baron Steuben Chapter was organized January 16, 1897 at
the home of Mrs. Charles F. Kingsley who was named the first Regent; the
new chapter took the name of Baron Steuben and enrolled 112 members; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Kingsley set a high standard and continued to serve in
the capacity of Regent until 1910, during which time she declined re-e-
lection and was named Honorary Regent for Life; and
WHEREAS, The Baron Steuben Chapter was instrumental in the restoration
of Baron Steuben's grave at Remsen, New York, and ten graves of Revolu-
tionary War Soldiers were marked in Steuben County; the chapter also
contributed to schools, educational items, and war relief; and
WHEREAS, On the verge of disbanding in 1991, the Corning Chapter
suggested merging the two chapters together; one year later the Corn-
ing-Baron Steuben Chapter was approved by the National Organization in
Washington, D.C.; and
WHEREAS, The Corning-Baron Steuben Chapter NSDAR continues their work
promoting patriotism, working with and supporting veterans, awarding an
annual scholarship, preserving the history of the local community, and
assisting those descendants of Revolutionary War Soldiers in becoming
members of the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution;
and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when organiza-
tions of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-

tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Corning-Baron Steuben Chapter
of the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution; and be
it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Corning-Baron Steuben Chapter of the National Society of
Daughters of the American Revolution.
