LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the Kent
Public Library
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize that the
quality and character of life in the communities across the great State
of New York is reflective of certain exemplary institutions whose
purpose is dedicated to serving the community and the needs of its citi-
zenry; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the 50th Anniversary of the Kent Public Library; and
WHEREAS, Established in 1964, it began as the Willett C. Jewell
Library Association in a storefront on Chauncey Road in Lake Carmel;
eventually it changed its name to the Kent Literary Association, relo-
cating to a corner of Gladys Boalt's sewing store; and
WHEREAS, On May 25, 1967, it was granted a provisional charter by the
State Education Department as the Kent Free Public Library; and
WHEREAS, On September 26, 1987, by unanimous vote of the Kent Town
Board, the library changed its status from an association library to a
town public library, effective January 1, 1988; and
WHEREAS, On September 16, 1988, the Kent Public Library was granted a
permanent charter by the State Education Department; and
WHEREAS, In July of 2001, the citizens of the Town of Kent overwhelm-
ingly voted to build a new Town Center, which would include a new
library building; it was completed in November 2004, and is located on
Route 52 in the Kent Town Center; and
WHEREAS, Steeped in a proud and distinguished history, the Kent Public
Library may take just pride in its purposeful growth as it looks forward
to continuing to serve the educational, cultural and intellectual needs
of the community; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Kent Public Library; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Kent Public Library in Kent, New York.
