LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending the Saranac Chapter of the Daughters
of the American Revolution upon the occasion of hosting the 2014 Inter-
national Memorial Service to be held Saturday, June 7, 2014
WHEREAS, The quality and character of life in this Nation, and the great
State of New York, is reflective of the purposeful lives and good works
of those patriotic and civic-minded organizations and community members
who dedicate their lives to the service of others; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, it is the sense of this Legislative Body to commend
the Saranac Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution upon the
occasion of hosting the 2014 International Memorial Service to be held
on Saturday, June 7, 2014; and
WHEREAS, In September of 1775, the American Army moved north to invade
Canada; and
WHEREAS, The French living in lower Canada joined the American rebel
cause; and
WHEREAS, Fort Chambly and Montreal were both soon occupied by American
rebels; and
WHEREAS, American General Richard Montgomery was killed in the Battle
of Quebec City and the rebels retreated eventually to Fort Chambly; and
WHEREAS, In 1776, it is reported half of the rebels contracted small-
pox resulting in the death of approximately 200 soldiers of both the 4th
Dutchess County Militia and the 4th New York Line Brigade, as well as
General John Thomas; they are all buried at Fort Chambly; and
WHEREAS, After a defeat at Trois-Rivieres on June 8, 1776, the Ameri-
cans retreated to Crown Point, New York on Lake Champlain; and
WHEREAS, On June 2, 1925, the Saranac Chapter of the Daughters of the
American Revolution erected a monument at Fort Chambly in memory of
General John Thomas and the 200 soldiers; and
WHEREAS, Since 1996, the Saranac Chapter has conducted an Interna-
tional Memorial Service with organizations and dignitaries from Northern
New York and Southern Quebec on the grounds of Fort Chambly; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when organiza-
tions of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend the Saranac Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution
upon the occasion of hosting the 2014 International Memorial Service to
be held Saturday, June 7, 2014; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Saranac Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revo-
lution.
