LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION congratulating Miss New York, Nina Davuluri, upon
the occasion of being crowned Miss America 2014
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to act, in accord with
its long-standing traditions, to honor today's young people, the leaders
of tomorrow, whose character and achievements exemplify the ideals and
values cherished by this great State and Nation; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to congratu-
late Miss New York, Nina Davuluri, upon the occasion of being crowned
Miss America 2014 on September 15, 2013, at Boardwalk Hall Arena, in
Atlantic City, New Jersey; and
WHEREAS, Nina Davuluri, a native of Syracuse, New York, earned a Bach-
elor of Arts degree in Brain, Behavior and Cognitive Science from the
University of Michigan; her plans include attending medical school to
become a Physician; and
WHEREAS, Young women from across our great nation from diverse
cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds aspire to such lofty goals, the
pursuit of which molds and transforms these young women in an exemplary
manner; and
WHEREAS, Nina Davuluri was the first Indian-American to earn the
coveted title of Miss America; living the American dream, she truly
demonstrated the commitment and dedication necessary to make those
dreams come true; and
WHEREAS, After her 2013 crowning as Miss America, Nina Davuluri over-
came social media backlash as a result of her Indian-American ethnicity
mainly due to her Indian heritage playing a strong role in her life
since childhood; and
WHEREAS, Nina Davuluri carried the Bollywood dance skills she learned
during her many summers in India to the Miss America stage; and
WHEREAS, She proudly employs the influence her Miss America title
carries to advocate for cultural diversity with the launch of her
"Circle of Unity" campaign, which has served to unite communities across
America in promoting the importance of celebrating diversity; and
WHEREAS, Nina Davuluri serves as an inspiration to young women every-
where that dreams can come true especially when you seek to serve your
community and place others before yourself; and
WHEREAS, Currently, Miss America 2014 Nina Davuluri is embracing her
year of service with the ideals and tradition that have been the fabric
of the Miss America organization since its inception in 1921; and
WHEREAS, Nina Davuluri exemplifies the potential inherent in our young
women; she is an outstanding role model for her peers and for the young
people with whom she works and stands with poise and purpose to face the
challenges of new experiences; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate Miss New York, Nina Davuluri, upon the occasion of being
crowned Miss America 2014, with the anticipation of her continued exem-
plary representation of the people of this great Empire State; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Miss America 2014 Nina Davuluri.
