LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Andrew Menkes upon the occasion of being
named Man of the Year by Madison Jewish Center
WHEREAS, The quality and character of life in New York State is greatly
enriched by its religious institutions and the faithful and generous
service of those who devote themselves to endeavors of family, faith,
and community; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and
commend institutions and individuals of such magnanimous conduct and
bearing who demonstrate a deep and continuing concern for others, and in
so doing, inspire others to do the same; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and fully in accord with its long-
standing traditions, it is the intent of this Legislative Body to honor
Andrew Menkes upon the occasion of being named Man of the Year by the
Madison Jewish Center; this auspicious occasion will be celebrated on
Sunday, June 8, 2014, at the Madison Jewish Center in Brooklyn, New
York; and
WHEREAS, Established in 1931, Madison Jewish Center (MJC) is located
in the heart of Brooklyn in the Madison neighborhood; for 83 years, it
has proudly served the Madison, Marine Park, Sheepshead Bay and Midwood
communities; and
WHEREAS, Each year at its Anniversary Journal Celebration, MJC proudly
honors members in recognition of their enduring and outstanding service
to the synagogue; and
WHEREAS, Andrew Menkes has given not only of his time and energies but
also of his competence, intelligence and leadership and consequently has
been designated for special honor; and
WHEREAS, Andrew Menkes was a member of the New York National Guard for
24 years, and also retired from the New York City Police Department with
the rank of Lieutenant Special Assignment; he holds a Bachelor of Arts
degree from City College and a Master's degree from John Jay College;
and
WHEREAS, This esteemed man is a member and past president of the
NYPD's Shomrim Society; and
WHEREAS, A vital member of the MJC community, Andrew Menkes is
co-chair of the MJC Ritual Committee and a member of the Administrative
Board; in addition, he serves as Gabbi and is a choir member; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the entire period of his community service, a
period of constructive involvement, Andrew Menkes has stood constant in
dignity, good grace and humor; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an individ-
ual for the benefit of others which this remarkable man has displayed
throughout his life; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Andrew Menkes upon the occasion of being named Man of the Year by
the Madison Jewish Center; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Andrew Menkes.
