LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Roberta and The Honorable Ira B. Harkavy
upon the occasion of being named Couple of the Year by the Madison
Jewish Center

WHEREAS, The quality and character of life in New York State is greatly
enriched by its religious institutions and the faithful and generous
service of those who devote themselves to endeavors of family, faith,
and community; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and
commend institutions and individuals of such magnanimous conduct and
bearing who demonstrate a deep and continuing concern for others, and in
so doing, inspire others to do the same; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and fully in accord with its long-
standing traditions, it is the intent of this Legislative Body to honor
Roberta and The Honorable Ira B. Harkavy upon the occasion of being
named Couple of the Year by the Madison Jewish Center; this auspicious
occasion will be celebrated on Sunday, June 8, 2014, at the Madison
Jewish Center in Brooklyn, New York; and
WHEREAS, Established in 1931, Madison Jewish Center (MJC) is located
in the heart of Brooklyn in the Madison neighborhood; for 83 years, it
has proudly served the Madison, Marine Park, Sheepshead Bay and Midwood
communities; and
WHEREAS, Each year at its Anniversary Journal Celebration, MJC proudly
honors members in recognition of their enduring and outstanding service
to the synagogue; and
WHEREAS, An important part of MJC for over 50 years, Roberta and The
Honorable Ira B. Harkavy have given not only of their time and energies
but also of their competence, intelligence and leadership and conse-
quently have been designated for special honor; and
WHEREAS, Roberta Harkavy is a retired teacher and former administra-
tive assistant at Brooklyn College; for many years, she has served admi-
rably as Corresponding Secretary for the MJC Social Club and Chairperson
of the Adult Education Committee, as well as a choir member; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Ira B. Harkavy is a former New York State
Supreme Court Justice with 26 years of service in the New York State
Court System; he has served graciously as President, Secretary and
administrative board member of MJC, as well as chairperson of the High
Holiday Committee and member of the Ritual and Legal Committees; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the entire period of their community service, a
period of constructive involvement, Roberta and The Honorable Ira B.
Harkavy have stood constant in dignity, good grace and humor; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by individuals
for the benefit of others which this remarkable couple have displayed
throughout their lives; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Roberta and The Honorable Ira B. Harkavy upon the occasion of
being named Couple of the Year by the Madison Jewish Center; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Roberta and The Honorable Ira B. Harkavy.
