LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Bob Southworth upon the occasion of his
induction into the New York State Public High School Athletic Associ-
ation Hall of Fame

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to commend those nota-
ble teachers, coaches and officials within our midst, who serve the
youth of this great Empire State, and who have distinguished themselves
and their communities through their exemplary athletic achievements and
their outstanding professional commitments; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Bob
Southworth, who is in his 49th season as the head baseball coach at
Corcoran High School, upon his induction into the 2014 Hall of Fame
Class of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association
(NYSPHSAA); and
WHEREAS, Bob Southworth will be inducted into the NYSPHSAA Hall of
Fame during a celebration on July 30, 2014, at High Peaks Resort in Lake
Placid; and
WHEREAS, The New York State Public High School Athletic Association
Inc. (NYSPHSAA) is a non-profit, educational service organization
composed of public, parochial and private schools - dedicated to provid-
ing equitable and safe competition for New York's student athletes; and
WHEREAS, The NYSPHSAA serves as a central organization through which
its member high schools in the state may cooperate to promote sportsman-
like conduct in all athletic contests, conduct appropriate athletic
meets and tournaments, cooperate with the State Education Department in
fostering educationally sound athletic programs, adapt rules for govern-
ing sports contests, and continually seek data to support rule changes
leading to greater safety for high school athletes; and
WHEREAS, NYSPHSAA Hall of Fame inductees can be nominated by family,
friends or community members and are selected through a two-level
screening and selection committee process; nominations were endorsed by
each inductee's member Section of the Association; and
WHEREAS, Being inducted into the 2014 Hall of Fame Class of the
NYSPHSAA, permanently recognizes Bob Southworth for his long-time
commitment and dedication to the students of New York State; and
WHEREAS, Bob Southworth, a graduate of Valley Central High School and
Syracuse University, has been the head baseball coach at Corcoran High
School in Syracuse for nearly 50 years, a remarkable accomplishment; his
baseball team is now called Syracuse West because it includes players
from Fowler High School and the Institute of Technology at Syracuse
Central; and
WHEREAS, Over his impressive coaching tenure, Bob Southworth has
compiled a 694-321 career record, a second all-time record in New York
State, and he has won 10 high school baseball league championships, as
well as three Section III Championships; and
WHEREAS, Bob Southworth also has served as Section III Chairman and
provided his expertise to numerous local baseball organizations, includ-
ing Onondaga Babe Ruth, where he served as President, and Valley Babe
Ruth, where he served as Treasurer; and
WHEREAS, For his positive impact on his student athletes, Bob South-
worth was inducted into the Greater Syracuse Sports Hall of Fame in 1997
and the Corcoran High School Hall of Fame in 2008; and
WHEREAS, Bob Southworth has dedicated a lifetime of giving back to his
community and improving the quality of youth athletics; it is the custom
of this Legislative Body that when individuals of such accomplishments

are brought to our attention, they should be recognized by all the citi-
zens of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Bob Southworth upon the occasion of his induction into the 2014
Hall of Fame Class of the New York State Public High School Athletic
Association; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Bob Southworth.
