LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION memorializing Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to
proclaim May 2014 as Workers' Awareness Month in the State of New York

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize official
months set aside to increase awareness of serious matters that affect
the lives of citizens of New York State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, it is the intent of this Legislative Body to memo-
rialize Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to proclaim May 2014 as Workers' Aware-
ness Month in the State of New York; and
WHEREAS, According to the New York State Department of Labor, New York
State's private sector job count is at a healthy 7,539,300 in the
12-month period ending March 2014; and
WHEREAS, Over the 12-month period ending in March 2014, New York's
private sector jobs have climbed by 108,200, or 1.5 percent; and
WHEREAS, Increasing employment has remained a top priority for New
York State; and
WHEREAS, Based on numbers reported by the Department of Labor, New
York State's jobless rate has declined by 1.0 percentage, a steeper
decrease than in the nation as a whole; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body, representing the people of the great
Empire State, appreciates all workers, men and women, union and non-un-
ion, farm workers, and workers in the private and public sectors, who
work every day to make New York more productive and fiscally healthier
and stronger; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body also remembers the Haymarket rally in
Chicago in 1886, generally considered significant as the origin of May
Day, observing workers' rightful demands for an eight-hour workday; and
WHEREAS, During this month, the strong union traditions in New York
State as well as the belief in hard work and work ethics for union and
non-union workers are proudly recognized and observed as are New York
workers' freedom to organize in unions and for collective bargaining;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
memorialize Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to proclaim May 2014 as Workers'
Awareness Month in the State of New York; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to The Honorable Andrew M. Cuomo, Governor of the State of New
York.
