LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION memorializing Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to
proclaim June 9, 2014, Linemen Appreciation Day in the State of New York
WHEREAS, It the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize official
days set aside to increase awareness of the contributions of the brave
men and women who protect public safety; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to memorial-
ize Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to proclaim June 9, 2014, Linemen Appreci-
ation Day in the State of New York; and
WHEREAS, The profession of linemen is steeped in personal, family, and
professional tradition; these brave men and women are frequently the
first responders during storms and other catastrophic events, working to
make the scene safe for other public safety heroes; and
WHEREAS, The responsibility of a Lineman is to install, repair and
maintain overhead and underground electrical power lines and auxiliary
equipment; this position is the highest of a multi-step progression from
Apprentice Lineman to Journeyman Lineman and is expected to know all
aspects of Journeyman Lineman duties; and
WHEREAS, Power linemen work on electrically energized and de-energized
power lines, and perform a number of tasks associated with power lines,
including installation or replacement of distribution equipment such as
capacitor banks, as well as distribution transformers on poles, insula-
tors and fuses; and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, these duties include the use of ropes, knots,
and lifting equipment, and many times must be performed with primitive
manual tools where accessibility is limited; such conditions are common
in rural or mountainous areas that are inaccessible to trucks; and
WHEREAS, High voltage transmission lines can be worked live with prop-
er setups, and the lineman must be isolated from the ground; during this
time, the lineman wears special conductive clothing that is connected to
the live power line, at which point the line and the lineman are at the
same potential, allowing the lineman to handle the wire; and
WHEREAS, Oftentimes working with thousands of volts of electricity
high atop power lines, Linemen are on the job 24 hours a day, 365 days a
year, working under dangerous conditions far from their families to
construct and maintain the energy infrastructure of the United States;
and
WHEREAS, Regularly working above ground on poles or steel towers,
Linemen put their lives on the line every day with little recognition
from the community regarding the danger of their work; and
WHEREAS, It takes a special dedication, a strong desire to help others
and a tireless sense of community to forsake precious time with family
and friends to respond to the signal that the public is in need; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
memorialize Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to proclaim June 9, 2014, Linemen
Appreciation Day in the State of New York; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to The Honorable Andrew M. Cuomo.
