LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring John Ciero upon the occasion of his
retirement after many years of distinguished service to the Syracuse
City School District

WHEREAS, This Legislative Body seeks to acknowledge those outstanding
individuals within our midst whose professional lives and civic endeav-
ors serve to enhance the stature of the State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor John
Ciero upon the occasion of his retirement from the Syracuse City School
District after more than 30 years of teaching excellence; he will be
honored during a school board meeting on June 9, 2014; and
WHEREAS, John Ciero, a lifetime resident of Syracuse, New York, joined
the Syracuse City School District in 1980; since then, he has been work-
ing as a Special Education Teacher at Salem Hyde Elementary School; and
WHEREAS, As a dedicated and caring teacher at Salem Hyde Elementary
School, John Ciero has enriched the lives of countless children; he is a
member of the School of Promise committee which partners with Syracuse
University School of Education to improve elementary education for all
students by creating more inclusive spaces; and
WHEREAS, Besides his work in the classroom, John Ciero has served on
the Syracuse Teacher Center Policy Board for the past 28 years; the
Syracuse Teacher Center collaborates with local, state and national
organizations to provide educators in the City of Syracuse with the
highest level of professional development to impact classroom instruc-
tion and student achievement; and
WHEREAS, Annually, 3,500 teachers participate in more than 400 activ-
ities supported by the Syracuse Teacher Center; these activities include
courses, workshops, mentoring, training sessions, the creation of class-
room materials and instructional equipment, and a variety of other
activities; and
WHEREAS, During his tenure on the Syracuse Teacher Center Policy
Board, John Ciero has provided support to countless teachers and
rendered faithful, conscientious and valuable service to the Syracuse
City School District; he has held the position of board chairman since
2009, making him the longest serving member in Syracuse; he was also a
part of the negotiations team with the Syracuse Teachers Association;
and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the quality of life in their communities, demonstrating a long
and sustained commitment to the maintenance of high standards in the
field of education, have earned the esteem and respect of their
colleagues and recognition from all citizens of the State of New York;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor John Ciero upon the occasion of his retirement from the Syracuse
City School District after more than 30 years of teaching excellence;
and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to John Ciero.
