LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION memorializing Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to
proclaim October 1, 2014, as Love an Elder Day in the State of New York
WHEREAS, Our elders have raised, coached, taught, and shared with young-
er generations; and
WHEREAS, Many of our elders were hard working folks who comprised the
backbone of America's "Greatest" generation; and
WHEREAS, Our elders are history makers; and
WHEREAS, Our elders are neighbors who often need some help in order to
live in the homes they love; and
WHEREAS, October 1st is recognized by the United Nations as the Inter-
national Day to Honor Older Persons; and
WHEREAS, New York City declared October 1, 2012,as Love an Elder Day;
and
WHEREAS, Love an Elder Day means increased awareness of a too often
forgotten generation and strives to translate awareness into improved
community care at a time when our eldercare system is overburdened;
seniors age 85 and over are the fastest growing group in our population;
longevity is increasing; families are too often living at great
distances from oldest members; and community care is a proven part of
the solution; and
WHEREAS, The New York State Legislature affirms its commitment to
exercise a leadership role in urging all its citizens to support Love an
Elder Day; and
WHEREAS, It is most appropriate that this great Empire State recog-
nizes the worthy and beneficial purposes of celebrating Love an Elder
Day; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to call attention to
events which serve to bring people together for the united purpose of
actively pursuing improvements in their communities; now, therefore, be
it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
memorialize Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to proclaim October 1, 2014, as
Love an Elder Day in the State of New York; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to The Honorable Andrew M. Cuomo, Governor of the State of New
York.
