LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending The Honorable Arthur O. Eve upon the
occasion of the naming of the University at Buffalo's Educational Oppor-
tunity Center in his honor

WHEREAS, New York State's commitment to higher education is unparal-
leled; its history and stature are secured by the superlative caliber of
those champions of education who encourage and inspire students, prepar-
ing them for the future by instilling in them the value of a good educa-
tion and teaching them essential skills that will last a lifetime; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to acknowledge the
significant achievements in the distinguished lives of exceptional lead-
ers, whose dedication and achievements have been instrumental in devel-
oping character and academic excellence in the young people of New York
State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is proud to commend the
Honorable Arthur O. Eve upon the occasion of the naming of the Universi-
ty at Buffalo's Educational Opportunity Center in his honor by the SUNY
Board of Trustees; and
WHEREAS, A founding member of the New York State Black and Puerto
Rican Legislative Caucus, Arthur O. Eve was elected to the New York
State Assembly in 1966, following several years of service as an inde-
pendent ward leader in Buffalo, New York; and
WHEREAS, During his first term as an Assemblyman, Arthur O. Eve led
the effort to obtain an initial $500,000 of funding to establish the
State University of New York system's SEEK/Educational Opportunity
Program; and
WHEREAS, Since the 1970s, colleges in New York State have administered
the Arthur O. Eve Higher Education Opportunity Program, the primary
objective of which is to help provide a broad range of services to New
York State residents who, because of academic and economic circum-
stances, would otherwise be unable to attend a postsecondary educational
institution; and
WHEREAS, A few months after retiring from political office, Arthur O.
Eve established a foundation the mission of which is to fight for the
money allocated for the tutoring of students from underperforming
schools, which was being directed to other purposes; by 2004, New York
State approved his foundation to provide afterschool tutoring; and
WHEREAS, Four years later, the Brighter Choice Charter School for Boys
in Albany, New York, dedicated its new conference hall in honor of
Arthur O. Eve; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an individ-
ual for the benefit of others which Arthur O. Eve has displayed through-
out his life; and
WHEREAS, With just cause and true purpose, this Legislative Body is
pleased to recognize the significant contributions Arthur O. Eve has
made to excellence in education in the State of New York; now, there-
fore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend The Honorable Arthur O. Eve upon the occasion of the naming of
the University at Buffalo's Educational Opportunity Center in his honor;
and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to The Honorable Arthur O. Eve.
