LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION mourning the untimely death of Sergeant Shaina
Schmigel of Medina, New York, and honoring her distinguished record as a
member of the United States Army

WHEREAS, The courage and bravery of our military personnel will ensure
our continued role as a Nation which embodies the ideals of democracy,
and as a defender of liberty for people throughout the world; and
WHEREAS, It is with feelings of deepest regret that this Legislative
Body mourns the untimely death of Sergeant Shaina Schmigel of Medina,
New York, and honors her distinguished record as a member of the United
States Army; and
WHEREAS, Sergeant Shaina Schmigel, a paratrooper at Fort Bragg with
the 82nd Airborne Division died during a night-time training drill on
May 30, 2014, at the age of 21; and
WHEREAS, Sergeant Shaina Schmigel was born in Batavia, New York, and
was a 2010 graduate of Medina High School where she was very involved in
school activities including track, cheerleading and winterguard; she
enlisted in the United States Army after graduation; and
WHEREAS, She began her military career as a Military Intelligence
Analyst and, upon completion of her Military Intelligence training,
Sergeant Shaina Schmigel attended the United States Army Airborne
School, becoming a proud member of the Airborne community; and
WHEREAS, Sergeant Shaina Schmigel's first assignment was to Bravo
Company, 2nd Brigade Special Troops Battalion where she served as an
Intelligence Analyst and a Signal Intelligence Analyst; she deployed to
Iraq in the summer of 2011 in support of Operation New Dawn; and
WHEREAS, Upon return from Iraq Sergeant Shaina Schmigel was assigned
to HHC, 37th Engineer Battalion, where she participated in one rotation
to the Joint Readiness Training Center and several Brigade and Battalion
level training exercises; and
WHEREAS, Sergeant Shaina Schmigel served with distinction in her four
years of military service; her awards and decorations include the Army
Achievement Medal with one oak leaf cluster, the Army Good Conduct
Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Iraq Campaign Medal, the
Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Noncommissioned Officers
Professional Development Ribbon, the Army Service Ribbon, and the Para-
chutist Badge; and
WHEREAS, Beloved by her community, Sergeant Shaina Schmigel will be
remembered for her dedication to her family, her fearlessness and deter-
mination, and her happy nature; she is survived by her parents Karie
Schmigel and Kim (Debbie) Dexter; her sister, Sheniqua Samol; brother,
Matthew Scroger; half-sisters, Amanda, Kaycee and Samantha Dexter;
maternal grandparents, Donald K. (Susan) Schmigel Sr.; maternal great-
grandmother, Betty Quackenbush; paternal great-grandmother Nora Steele;
uncle, Donald K. (Jennifer Zynda) Schmigel Jr.; and many dear friends
along with her military family in North Carolina; and
WHEREAS, Residents of this great State must never forget the courage
with which our men and women served this country, and must recognize
that no greater debt is owed than that owed to those who give of their
lives for their beloved Nation; and
WHEREAS, The freedoms and security we cherish as Americans come at a
very high price for those serving in the military in times of conflict;
it is fitting and proper that we who are the beneficiaries of those who
risk their lives, leaving their families behind, express our appreci-
ation and eternal gratitude for their sacrifices and courageous acts;
now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
mourn the untimely death of Sergeant Shaina Schmigel, and to honor her
distinguished record as a member of the United States Army; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the family of Sergeant Shaina Schmigel.
