LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring WRGB CBS 6 upon the occasion of its 85th
Anniversary of continuous operation

WHEREAS, The State of New York takes great pride in acknowledging excep-
tional organizations which separate themselves by serving the community
and its constituents, and which deserve unique recognition; and
WHEREAS, WRGB CBS 6, founded in Schenectady, New York, is commemorat-
ing the 85th Anniversary of providing television programming for the
community; and
WHEREAS, The birth of WRGB dates back to January 13, 1928, when the
station, owned and operated by The General Electric Company, had their
first experimental television program broadcast, shown in founder Ernst
Alexanderson's home at 112 Adam Road in Schenectady, New York; this
momentous event has given WRGB the status of being the world's first
television station; and
WHEREAS, WRGB televised the world's first remote news telecast live
from the New York State Capitol in Albany, New York, with Governor Al
Smith's acceptance of his Party's nomination for President of the United
States; and
WHEREAS, Since its launch, WRGB has worked ardently to broadcast
programs which serve the variety of needs for all residents in the Capi-
tal Region; in addition to providing news, variety shows, light operas,
cartoons, musicals, dramas, sporting and political events and many other
public services, this venerated institution is well-known for its chari-
table donations to "Making A Difference," and "Coats For Kids," as well
as for broadcasting the annual Melodies of Christmas; and
WHEREAS, WRGB was presented an award in 1943 for its contributions to
television program development by the American Television Society; in
October of 1982, WRGB TV-6 became the first commercial TV station to
provide programming 24 hours a day; and
WHEREAS, President Ronald Reagan once said of WRGB, "as the first
television station in the United States, WRGB was a pioneer in the
truest sense of the word... the history of this station is truly, the
history of television;" and
WHEREAS, For the past 85 years, WRGB has offered an outstanding mix of
informational, educational, and community-oriented programming on a
persistent basis; and
WHEREAS, WRGB CBS 6 is a treasured community resource which has made
remarkable contributions to the entertainment and cultural environments
of the residents of the Capital Region and the State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Presently owned by the Sinclair Broadcasting Group located in
Schenectady, New York, WRGB forged the path for the nation and the world
in the creation of the television broadcast while satisfying the needs
of the Capital Region; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend WRGB CBS 6 upon the occasion of its 85th Anniversary; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the WRGB CBS 6 management and staff.
