LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the City
of Canandaigua, New York, on April 27, 2013

WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to honor and commem-
orate the proud and distinguished histories of the communities which
comprise the noble body of this great Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the 100th Anniversary of the City of Canandaigua, in Ontario Coun-
ty, New York; this milestone was celebrated with a Birthday party on
Saturday, April 27, 2013, at Sonnenberg Gardens & Mansion; and
WHEREAS, In 1913, the question of the Village of Canandaigua becoming
a city emerged; local leaders and businessmen revived the issue with a
petition, dated January 20th, requesting the Village Board to set a date
for public vote on this proposition, and if passed, a city charter would
be adopted and submitted to the state legislature for approval; and
WHEREAS, The vote was passed by a narrow margin, and the village board
members drafted a city charter for presentation to the state legislature
by the end of February of that year; on April 28, 1913, the bill was
signed by New York State Governor Sulzer, and Canandaigua officially
became a city; and
WHEREAS, Over the past 100 years, the City of Canandaigua has faced
many challenges and opportunities brought on by social, economic and
political changes; government restructuring, immigration, women's
suffrage, prohibition, world wars, economic busts and booms, urban
renewal and historic preservation, all impacted the community; and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, although there have been numerous changes to
life in this small city, Canandaigua, New York, remains an ideal place
to live, work, and raise a family; and
WHEREAS, Remaining fruitful over the ebb and flow of decades of growth
and change, the City of Canandaigua continues its commitment to enhanc-
ing the quality of life of its citizens, ensuring a positive business,
institutional and educational climate, and providing all essential
services; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the City of Canandaigua, New York,
recognizing the significance of the role it continues to play in the
life of the community of the State of New York; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the City of Canandaigua.
