LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Mayor Thomas M. Menino upon the occasion
of his retirement after many years of distinguished service to his
community

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and
commend individuals who have faithfully served with exemplary dedication
and conscientious service, significantly improving the quality of life
in the community; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern and fully in accord with its long-
standing traditions, it is the intent of this Legislative Body to honor
Thomas M. Menino upon the occasion of his retirement after many years of
distinguished service as the Mayor of Boston, Massachusetts; and
WHEREAS, Mayor Menino has served with great diligence and unswerving
commitment, earning the admiration, esteem and affection of his
colleagues and community, who wish him the best in his well-deserved
retirement; and
WHEREAS, Mayor Menino, the son of Susan and Carl Menino, was born in
Readville, a part of Boston's Hyde Park neighborhood, on December 27,
1942; he earned an associate degree in business management in 1963, at
Chamberlayne Junior College and went on to the University of Massachu-
setts Boston, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Community
Planning in 1988; and
WHEREAS, Boston's longest-serving mayor, Mayor Thomas M. Menino served
on the City Council for several years before becoming Mayor; he and his
wife, the former Angela Faletra, are the proud parents of two children,
Susan and Thomas, Jr., and the loving grandparents of six grandchildren;
and
WHEREAS, A national leader on neighborhood issues, Mayor Menino
believes that government is about helping people; elected five times as
Mayor of Boston and five times as a City Councilor from Hyde Park, he
has spent a lifetime building a better Boston for residents and busi-
nesses; and
WHEREAS, Nicknamed the "Urban Mechanic" early in his career for his
tireless work ethic and attention to the basics that make for a thriving
city, Mayor Menino is working to inspire a generation of New Urban
Mechanics, rooted in the belief that citizens are the best civic entre-
preneurs, forging partnerships to revitalize neighborhoods, strengthen-
ing the economy through workforce investments, and innovating in educa-
tion, his vision for Boston is based on strong, welcoming communities
that provide unlimited opportunity for success; and
WHEREAS, A lifelong resident of Hyde Park, Mayor Menino understands
that a city is only as strong as its neighborhoods; he ushered in the
nation's first citywide Main Streets program to support small businesses
and spur local economic development; and
WHEREAS, Deeply committed to the citizens of his community, Mayor
Thomas M. Menino has served with great diligence and unswerving commit-
ment, earning the admiration, esteem, and affection of his colleagues
and community; and
WHEREAS, As he completes his service as Mayor, Thomas M. Menino leaves
and indelible imprint on his community, its services and quality of
life, and richly merits the gratitude and appreciation of the citizens
of Boston, and the recognition and commendation of this Legislative
Body; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Mayor Thomas M. Menino upon the occasion of his retirement after
many years of distinguished service to his community; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Mayor Thomas M. Menino.
