LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION memorializing Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to declare
January 2014 as Anti-Poverty Month in the State of New York, in recogni-
tion of the 50th Anniversary of the launching of the War on Poverty

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize official
months that are set aside to increase awareness of serious issues that
affect the lives of citizens of New York State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, it is the sense of this Legislative Body to memori-
alize Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to declare January 2014 as Anti-Poverty
Month in the State of New York, in recognition of the 50th Anniversary
of the launching of the War on Poverty; and
WHEREAS, January 8, 2014, marks the 50th Anniversary of President
Lyndon B. Johnson's announcing his war on poverty; this plan was an
attempt to eradicate poverty in America through government planning; and
WHEREAS, The war on poverty sought to provide underprivileged young
Americans with the opportunity to develop skills, continue education,
and find useful work; and
WHEREAS, The war on poverty sought to give every American community
the opportunity to develop a comprehensive plan to fight its own poverty
and help them to carry out their plans; and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, the war on poverty sought to give dedicated
Americans the opportunity to enlist as volunteers in the war against
poverty; and
WHEREAS, It also sought to give many workers and farmers the opportu-
nity to break through particular barriers which bar their escape from
poverty, and sought to give the entire nation the opportunity to attack
poverty through the establishment; and
WHEREAS, President Lyndon B. Johnson said, "Because it is right,
because it is wise, and because, for the first time in our history, it
is possible to conquer poverty."; and
WHEREAS, It is imperative that there be greater public awareness of
this serious issue, and more must be done to increase activity at the
local, State and national levels to stamp out poverty; now, therefore,
be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
memorialize Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to declare January 2014 as Anti-Po-
verty Month in the State of New York, in recognition of the 50th Anni-
versary of the launching of the War on Poverty; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to The Honorable Andrew M. Cuomo, Governor of the State of New
York.
