LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION congratulating the Town of Canandaigua upon the
occasion of having the Cheshire Meeting Hall placed on the National
Register of Historic Places
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to commend the efforts
of those organizations and individuals who seek to bring recognition to
historical places within the State of New York, and in doing so, help to
ensure that the complete history of our State and Nation is preserved
and shared with present generations of citizens; and
WHEREAS, It is also the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize
events of significance which exemplify the history and development of
the State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to congratu-
late the Town of Canandaigua upon the occasion of having the Cheshire
Meeting Hall placed on the National Register of Historic Places; and
WHEREAS, The 19th-century built Cheshire Meeting Hall, originally a
landmark family theater and today part of a community-wide restoration
project, is on its way to the prestigious list of New York State and
National Registers of Historical Places; and
WHEREAS, Built in 1898, the Cheshire Meeting Hall lies in Ontario
County and is the first property in the town to receive such acclaim;
formerly known as the Knights of Maccabees Hall, and later as the Acade-
my Grange No. 62, it is centrally located in the Hamlet of Cheshire in
the Town of Canandaigua; and
WHEREAS, The Cheshire Meeting Hall is owned, managed, and supported by
Cheshire Community Action Team (CCAT), a local volunteer group who have
begun a restoration project to return this historic landmark to its
original glory as a community center and theater; and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, the long-term goal involves the building becom-
ing a focal point for youth programs, community games and activities,
club and social gatherings, art exhibits, plays and musicals; and
WHEREAS, In tribute to the perseverance and dedication of so many
individuals and organizations, as well as in conjunction with the
project's official entry on both State and National Registers, a cele-
bration and recognition event will take place Saturday, September 14,
2013; and
WHEREAS, This auspicious occasion presents a unique opportunity for
this Legislative Body to recognize and pay tribute to the Town of Canan-
daigua, New York; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is pleased to have this opportunity to
express its highest admiration for the Cheshire Meeting Hall, and for
all of the individuals who have worked to bring proper attention to a
place and time which merits recognition in the grand panorama of the
history of our State and Nation; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate the Town of Canandaigua upon the occasion of having the
Cheshire Meeting Hall placed on the National Register of Historic Plac-
es; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Cheshire Meeting Hall of Canandaigua, New York.
